Obituary for Albert J "Bud" Smaldone

South Glens Falls

Albert J. (Bud) Smaldone passed away peacefully at Glens Falls Hospital after a brief illness surrounded by his loving family.

Born October 23, 1926 in Glens Falls he was the son of the late Albert and Ruth (Vandenburg) Smaldone.

Bud was a proud Veteran of World War II, serving his country in the Army. After discharge, he attended the Eastman School of Music before returning home to help operate the family business, Smaldone Cement Blocks for many years. After its closing Bud put his amazing building and masonry talents to work, spending the years up until his retirement self-employed, in the building and contracting trade. After his retirement, he continued with his woodworking projects, making lovely things for his family, friends, and anyone who he thought they would give pleasure to.

Until very recently, he hosted a weekly poker game with some dear friends. His swimming pool was open to not only his family and friends but all the neighborhood children and anyone who wanted to swim. He enjoyed everyone who came to his home, and welcomed them with hospitality and peanut butter cups.

Besides his family he was also predeceased by his wife Margaret (Peggy) Smaldone on July 8, 1994 after 42 years of marriage, and also by his brother Richard C. Smaldone and his wife Patricia.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Barbara Robillard of Gansevoort, his son Albert J. (Skip) Smaldone III, and his wife Donna, of Glens Falls, his six grandchildren, Adam Robillard and his wife Marisa, Megan Balsamo and her husband Ralphie, Erin Reed and her husband Dan, Grant Smaldone, Brittany Viehman, Brittany Decker, and his seven great-grandchildren, Olivia, Loren and Mason Reed, Dina Balsamo, Riley McGuire, Rauri Smith, and Brody Decker.

He also leaves his brother Bruce Smaldone and his wife Barbara, and many nieces, nephews and their families.

We would like to extend a special thanks to all of the nurses on Tower 5 and Tower 2. They went above and beyond, and all health care providers should aspire to model after them. An extra special thanks to Sue and Lisa on Tower 2, for not only taking care of Dad, but of us, and giving us the strength to let him “be on his way.”

Our family was blessed to have this man as our Dad and “Poppy”. He taught us so much about himself, and life right up to his final days. We were everything to him; he was a true family man. It will be incredibly hard without him, but he has passed on everything that we need to go on, aspiring to be the type of person he was, honest, loyal, kind, and brave.

Friends may call from 4 to7 p.m. on Tuesday Jan 13, 2015 at M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 136 Main St., South Glens Falls, NY 12803.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday Jan 14, 2015 at M.B. Kilmer funeral home, with the Reverend Nancy Goff from the Church of the Messiah officiating.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family in the spring.
