Obituary for Ruth Ostrander (George)

Ruth Ostrander (George)
South Glens Falls
Ruth M. Ostrander, 91, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 21, 2015, at Fort Hudson Health Center in Fort Edward, NY after dealing courageously for six years with the effects of a debilitating stroke, always with her loving and devoted family by her side.
Born March 28, 1924, in Greenville, SC, she was the daughter of the late Dentis Tet and Iola (Tumblin) George. Ruth graduated from Ellen Woodside High School in Greenville where she was a member of a state championship basketball team, and she also played softball. On March 19, 1945, Ruth married Donald F. Ostrander, whom she had met on a blind date during World War II. After Don's return from the service, they relocated to South Glens Falls where they shared 66 years of love and friendship together until his passing in 2011.
For many years Ruth and her husband owned and operated Don’s Drive-In, a popular eatery opposite the old South Glens Falls High School, where she was known as "Mrs. O"; she later was a long-time clerk at the Joy Store in South Glens Falls until her retirement. She was a lifetime member of the Glen Star Chapter 95 Order of the Eastern Star, Queensbury, the VFW Auxiliary Adirondack Post 2475 of Glens Falls, and the First Baptist Church of Glens Falls.
Ruth was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and was happiest when she was spending time with her grand- and great-grandchildren, who knew her as "Nan". She was also dedicated to her sisters and their extended families in addition to her own immediate family. She was a regular at George family reunions in North Myrtle Beach, SC, and as her own family grew Ruth and Don immersed themselves in family activities whenever possible, often at their camp in North Creek where many hunting as well as New Year's Eve parties took place! After retiring they wintered in North Myrtle Beach, where Ruth loved entertaining their frequent guests. Another passion Ruth shared with Don was the love of music, especially the big band sounds of their youth. Ruth never let adversity get her down and maintained an incredibly positive outlook all of her life. She had a loving spirit and welcoming heart and her home was always open to neighbors, friends and family; an extra plate was always ready at the table!
In addition to her parents and her husband, Ruth was predeceased by her sisters Vera Roache, Edith Garrett, Mary Vaughn, Beatrice Kellett, and Mary Moore, and half-sisters Pauline Sherman, Lillie Welborn and Dorothy Coker.
Left to cherish her memory are her four children, Robert Ostrander of North Creek, Gary Ostrander and his wife Barbara of Thurman, Sandra Lindenmuth and her husband Thomas of Queensbury, and Cheryl Marks and her husband Kenneth of Argyle, as well as her nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and many special nieces and nephews.
At Ruth’s request, there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be conducted at the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Fair Haven, VT on Wednesday, June 3 at 11:00 am with Rev. Patti Girard of the Hartford Yoked Parish officiating. Arrangements are in the care of M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 136 Main St., South Glens Falls, NY 12803. Ruth had a great appreciation for the many aides, nurses and therapists who cared for her and touched her heart during her time at Fort Hudson, and the family would like to recognize them. In addition, memorial donations can be made in Ruth’s name to Steps for Stroke, PO Box 2424, Glens Falls, NY 12801 or the First Baptist Church of Glens Falls, 100 Maple Street, Glens Falls, NY 12801.
