Obituary for Robert Douglas "Doug" Paton

R. Douglas “ Doug” Paton, 79, of Brant Lake, beloved husband of Mary Elizabeth “Mert” Paton, passed into everlasting life on Monday June 8, 2015.

Born in Wooster Ohio, Doug was the son of the late, Robert R. and Mary Lou (Pugh) Paton.

Doug married his beloved Mert on February 1, 1964, and the two shared a joyous union of over 50 years. After raising their three sons in Latham NY, Doug and Mert relocated to the shores of beautiful Brant Lake.

Doug was a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan, class of 1958 and served in the Armed Forces performing cartographical services in Iran from 1959-1961.

After entering the work force with the Armstrong Cork Company, Doug left to become an accomplished financial advisor with Merrill Lynch, EF Hutton, and Smith Barney until his retirement.

Douglas was very involved with community based charitable organizations, having served on the board of directors of both the Trinity Institute and Rehabilitation Support Services, Inc., being President of the latter. Doug also served on the Board of Trustees of the Cohoes Savings Bank, and was a long time member of the Mendelsohn’s Men’s choir.

After retirement, Doug continued his commitment to the community, by serving as a prominent member and President of the Brant Lake Association, Board Member and Secretary of Hudson Headwaters Health Network Foundation, a member of the Brant Lake Planning Board and the Horicon Town Library, as well as being an active participant on the local Meals on Wheels program until just a few short months before his passing. Doug was a devoted Christian, serving as Elder for the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Albany and a member of the Vestry of the Adirondack Mission.

Doug was an avid outdoorsman, alpine skier and a longtime member of the “Back Woods Ski Club” at Gore Mountain.

Besides his parents Doug is predeceased by his sister, Janet Telders.

Left to cherish Doug’s memory are his wife, Mary E. (McKim) Paton; his brother, John of Dublin Ohio; his loving sons, Stevan (Carrie) Paton, of Clifton Park, Scott (Kathleen) Paton, of Latham, Todd (Dana) Paton, of Gansevoort; his grandchildren, Erica and Jack, of Gansevoort, Chase, Cole and Danielle, of Clifton Park, and Taylor, Ashley, Brianna, KayLee and Zachary, of Latham.

A memorial mass will be celebrated on Sunday June 14, 2015 at 3pm at The Church of the Holy Cross, 3764 Main St. Warrensburg, NY 12885, with the Rev. Thomas J. Pettigrew, Rector, officiating.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
