Obituary for Carl William Carlton Sr.

Carl William Carlton Sr.
Carl W. Carlton Sr., 82, of South Glens Falls, passed away August 23, 2015 surrounded by family at home after a long illness.

He is predeceased by his parents, Viola and Clarence Carlton Sr. of Glens Falls, his stepfather Tore Kvinlaug of Glens Falls, his sister Charlotte Elder, and brothers James Carlton and Clarence (Buster) Carlton Jr.

Carl is survived by his wife, Lois, his children, Kelley Harrington (Douglas) of Argyle, Connie Carlton of South Glens Falls, Carl W. Carlton Jr. (Robin) of Pattersonville, Keith Carlton (Jennifer) of Palgrave, Ontario, and Lois Mangione (Jay) of Loudonville; grandchildren, Zachary Slack, Clancy Slack, Bradley Carlton (Stephanie), Joshua Carlton, Douglas Carlton, Hannah Carlton, Oliver Carlton, Jack Mangione, Thaddeus Mangione and Linus Mangione, his brothers, Wayne (JoAnna) of Queensbury, and Robert of Glens Falls; and his sisters, JoAnn Normile (John) of Fort Edward and Pauline Turner of Newport News, VA, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Carl was born in Plattsburgh, NY on July 26, 1933 and grew up in Glens Falls. He graduated from Glens Falls High School in 1952 and served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1956. Carl was honorably discharged, receiving the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He next joined the Glens Falls City Police Department as a Patrol Officer, and on June 11, 1960 married the love of his life, Lois A. Mooso. In 1962 Carl moved to the New York State Police where he served for 25 years, and ultimately retired as Zone Sergeant in 1987. Shortly after retiring, he was asked to return to policing and appointed Chief of Police of the City of Glens Falls, where he served for over 7 more years.

The consummate family man and friend, Carl spent as much time as he could in the company of Lois, their children, grandchildren and a close group of life-long friends. He enjoyed laughter filled trips to camp or vacation with their ever-extending family. In retirement, he was the biggest fan his grandchildren had, attending everything he could from sporting events to concerts and spelling bees.

Carl loved most being surrounded by the chaos and laughter of his large family, quiet discussions with his “coffee buddies”, helping his girls, and tackling big projects with his brother and sons. Known for his generosity, he’d always put his priorities aside for others in need, and often did so without you knowing.

Carl had unwavering integrity, a pithy wit and ability to conjure up a saying to match almost any occasion. He is now “right in God’s pocket”, and forever in our hearts. We feel adrift today, like we’ve lost an anchor.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Fort Hudson Nursing Home, Alzheimer’s Unit, 319 Broadway, Fort Edward, NY 12828 or the Wildwood Foundation at 2995c Curry Road Extension, Schenectady NY 12303.

Arrangements are in the care of M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 136 Main Street, South Glens Falls, NY 12803. To view Carl’s Book of Memories and post online condolence, please visit www.kilmerfuneralhome.com.
