Obituary for Janet Smith (Frasier)

Janet Smith (Frasier)
Gansevoort
Janet M. (Frasier) Smith, 90, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Monday October 5, 2015 at the Fort Hudson Nursing Center after a very long illness.
Born on June 19, 1925 she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Mildred (George) Frasier.
She was raised in Hudson Falls, NY and always had an adventurous spirit. At Age 14 and 15 she took two long bike rides to Cape Cod with her sister who was a year younger. They stayed in guest homes along the way. This was obviously in a different day and age.
Janet graduated salutatorian from Hudson Falls High School at age 15 then went to Cornell University on a full scholarship majoring in mathematics and accounting. Upon graduation she was recruited by General Electric in Schenectady, where she worked in accounting for five years.
While in Schenectady, she was involved with a mountain climbing club and climbed most of the High Peaks of the Adirondacks. She also climbed Mt. Washington in NH twice in her life, the second time being at age 50. It was in Schenectady she also met her future husband which led to the biggest adventure of her life and also the fulfillment of a lifelong dream; becoming a dairy farmer’s wife and owning a farm.
After her marriage in March 1950 to Ted Smith and moving to the farm in Gansevoort, she became a 4-H leader in her community and got to know many of the areas young girls. This she thoroughly enjoyed as she loved to sew and garden. Her other hobbies included playing the piano, quilting, reading, camping, riding her bike (into her 70’s), the daily comics and word jumbles which she continued to do until a year ago. Janet loved languages, speaking French, German, some Italian and in her 70’s she went back to take college courses to learn Russian. She also loved the English language, poems and limericks, and she had an amazing vocabulary which she taught to her eight children by using (as she called them), her fifty cent words. When asked what that word meant, she always sent them to the dictionary to look up and learn how to spell it. She was a lifelong learner.
She also loved traveling, maps and geography. In their retirement, she and Ted traveled across the USA, several trips to Florida, Nepal for two months, Italy and Israel.
Janet put her gifts of accounting to good work for many years as she did income tax returns for many individuals and also farms in the area. She was a member at the First Baptist Church of So. Glens Falls from 1950 to her death and attended services regularly up until three months ago. During these years she served as the church treasurer for 30 years as well as serving on the Board of Deaconesses, helping with VBS and serving in the nursery for many years. She loved children and babies as well as helping others in any way she could.
She was a very humble and sensible person with a great sense of humor which increased as she grew older. During the years when she had to live “only in the moment” due to her Alzheimer’s, there were many wonderful memories made which included much laughter with her children.
Janet was a woman of great faith even during the darkest of times. She looked forward to eternity spent with her Savior Jesus Christ to whom she opened her heart at age 12.
Besides her parents Janet was predeceased by her brother and two sisters, as well as her daughter Amy in 1984. Her wonderful husband Ted passed in 2007. She continued to live in her farmhouse for four more years and then went to live in assisted living at The Terrace at the Glen in Queensbury. There she made many lovely friends and enjoyed many wonderful activities including being chosen to be part of a pilot program at The Hyde Museum for people with Alzheimer’s, which she loved.
Throughout her life she was wonderful at making the very best of any situation she faced. She lived her life with joy and thankfulness for her many blessings.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Eileen (Don) Farleigh, Norma (Paul) Seefeldt, Marshall (Sue) Smith, Ed (Ann) Smith, Thelma (Terry) Reid, Sheldon (Connie) Smith and Andrea (Jim) Becker; along with 17 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
