Obituary for Ruth Caroline Hawkins (Mahaffy)

Ruth Caroline Hawkins (Mahaffy)
South Glens Falls-

Ruth Caroline (Mahaffy) Hawkins, 86, of Harrison Avenue Extension, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2016 at the Glens Falls Hospital.

Born in Argyle, NY on July 20,1930, she was the daughter of the late, Howard and Myrtle (Wever) Mahaffy.

Ruth graduated from Argyle Central High School at 16 years old. She then went on to receive her degree in Dental Hygiene from the Rochester Institute of Technology before finishing her degree in education from SUNY Cortland. Ruth earned her dual license as a Dental Hygienist in New York and Connecticut. She worked at the Albany Medical Center Dental Clinic tending to accident victims and assisted in dental surgery, as well as in Mystic Conn as a Dental Hygienist. Ruth worked as a dental hygienist for Wilton Developmental Center for many years before retiring at 82 years old from the offices of Dr. Walton, Dr. Alfert and Dr. Raffuel, in Ballston Spa.

Ruth was a great artist who excelled in painting. She was an excellent cook and was legendary among family and friends for entertaining. She was very giving with everything anyone needed, except with her fudge recipe. Ruth loved her grandcat, Yves St. Papillon, watching her favorite tennis player, Andy Murray and music from her favorite singer, Dean Martin. Most of all she loved her daughter, whom she rescued at a young age from domestic violence. In her daughters eyes her mother is her hero.

In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her brother, Orley Mahaffy and her sister, Eleanor Robertson.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Kami Hawkins; several grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins; as well as many friends.

At Ruth’s request there will be no calling hours. Arrangements are in the care of M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 82 Broadway Fort Edward, NY 12828.

A graveside service will be conducted on Saturday October 1, 2016 at 2pm in North Argyle Cemetery, with the Rev. Deborah Peacock, pastor of the Argyle United Methodist Church and Sister Donna Irvine S.S.N.D., co officiating.
