Obituary for Elizabeth "Betty" Burns (Dwyer)

SOUTH GLENS FALLS

Elizabeth “Betty” Dwyer Burns, 91, slipped into eternal life on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at the Glens Falls Hospital surrounded by her children and her loving husband of 72 years.

Born December 8, 1925 in Glens Falls, NY, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary “Mae” (Moran) Dwyer. Betty grew up on Oak Street in Hudson Falls.

Betty graduated from high school at St. Mary’s Academy in 1943 after attending elementary school in St. Mary’s of Hudson Falls. On May 14, 1945, she married Edward C. Burns in St. Mary’s Church in Hudson Falls.

Betty was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Church in South Glens Falls. Betty enjoyed attending daily Mass and socializing afterwards. Betty was a charter member of the Rosary Altar Society, h was a founding member of the parish Bereavement Committee. For many years while raising her children, Betty was active in the Home-School Association for St. Michael’s and St. Mary’s Academy, volunteered at St. Mary’s, and taught CCD Betty enjoyed attending daily mass and socializing afterward.
Betty loved to knit. Her grandchildren enjoy many personal “Grammy afghans” and baby sweaters. She also loved to sew, crochet, and bake. A joy in life was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her promise was to always to be in one of three places… “in front of us to cheer us on, behind us to have our back, or next to us so we did not walk alone.”

Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband, Edward, her children Dr. Edward Burns, Judith Friedman and her husband Larry, Mary Burns, John Burns and his wife Sharon, Dr. Catherine Nyberg and her husband Herb, Christine Burns, Mark Burns, and Richard Burns and his wife Bridget, her grandchildren Edward C. Burns, Kate Bell (Scott), Dr. Kevin Friedman (Casey), Dr. Scott Friedman (Jen), Dr. Matthew Friedman (Vanessa), Megan Guarnier (Billy Crane), Bryan Guarnier (Marc), Kristie Brinkman (Jason), Rob Burns (Heidi), Joe Burns (Lyndi), Michael Burns, Kelli Lowe (Eric), Michael Nyberg (Jacque), Elizabeth Nyberg, Christine Nyberg (Tony Pagnano), and Annie Nyberg, 23 great-grandchildren, her brother Thomas Dwyer and his wife Gerri, and her sister Mary DuFault, as well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Betty is predeceased by her sisters Helen Powers and Naomi Collier.
Friends may call from 12-2pm on Sunday, March 26, 2017 at the St. Michael the Archangel Church, 80 Saratoga Ave., South Glens Falls, NY. Arrangements are in the care of the M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 136 Main Street, South Glens Falls, NY 12803.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2pm following calling hours at the church with the Rev. Guy A. Childs and Rev. George Brucker concelebrating.

Rite of Committal will take place at the convenience of the family at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Betty’s name can be made to Angelman Syndrome Foundation 75 Executive Drive, Suite 327, Aurora, IL 60504. The foundation funds research and support for individuals with this neurogenetic condition. Betty’s great-grandson Keegan has Angelman Syndrome.

The family wishes to extend a special appreciation to Liza Wood for her care and compassion and to Betty’s niece Roberta Deyette for all her support.
