Retired National Symphony Orchestra Clarinetist

Loren Wayne Kitt, former Principal Clarinetist for the National Symphony Orchestra, lost his battle with cancer on September 4, 2017, in Glens Falls, NY. He was 76. Loren (Mr. Kitt) is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Catherine Kitt, and a large family of children, grand-children, and nieces and nephews.

Born in Bremerton, Washington, Loren (Mr. Kitt) graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music and performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic and the Milwaukee Symphony before joining the NSO in 1970. In addition, he served as Professor of Music at the Oberlin Conservatory, the Peabody Institute of John Hopkins University, and the University of Maryland. Mr. Kitt was also a featured artist with the Spoleto Festival of Two Worlds, a guest artist with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, a member of the American Chamber Players and frequent contributor to the programs at Bay Chamber Concerts in Maine.

A long-time resident of Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C., and most recently Camden, Maine, Loren (Mr. Kitt) enjoyed golf, hiking, and family gatherings. In addition to his wife, Catherine, Loren (Mr. Kitt) leaves behind a daughter, Sandra Kitt, of Falls Church, VA; step-daughter Cynthia Sherwood, a resident of Queensbury, NY (husband Parker III and children Parker IV and Laurel); step-son Christopher Clusen of Fort Collins, CO (wife Maryanne and son Alexander); and daughter Karen Kitt who is a Senior at the University of Denver, Denver, CO.

At Loren’s request there will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church in Lake George, NY on Monday, October 2 at 11 A.M. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the C. R. Wood Cancer Center at Glens Falls Hospital, Glens Falls, NY.

Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
