Obituary for Arthur Elmer Thornton

NORTH CREEK
Arthur E. Thornton, 88, went to meet his Heavenly Father on Saturday, October 14, 2017, at Warren Center in Queensbury.

Born in Glens Falls on July 4, 1929, he was the son of the late Arthur and Elizabeth Thornton. Arthur married his wife, “Trudi” Mattison in 1949 in Glens Falls. They shared their lives and raised six daughters during their 63 years of marriage, before her untimely passing in May of 2012.

Arthur was a member of both the Calvary Bible Church in Wevertown, and the Durkeetown Baptist Church in Fort Edward.

Arthur loved to spend time with his large, extended family and was a devoted husband, grandfather and great-grandfather. He also enjoyed interaction with animals and birds of any description.

He often took rides to local destinations to look at old cars and view the scenery. These were passions he shared with his wife as they frequently went on road trips. They also travelled, and made a once-in-a-lifetime cross-country trip to see other parts of the United States.

Professionally, Arthur was the proud entrepreneur and owner for many years of the Johnsburg Garage in North Creek, where he specialized in his profession as an auto body mechanic.

In addition to his parents and wife, Arthur was predeceased by an infant son, Matthew Thornton; as well as several brothers and sisters.

Arthur is survived by his six daughters: E. Ruth Blaney of Seattle, WA, Sharron Lamarche-Langworthy and husband Stan of Queensbury, Terri Brown and husband Joel of Escondido, CA, Lori Thornton of Townshend, VT, Cindy Martin and husband Bret of Gouveneur, and Lisa LaRocque of Moreau; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Pauline Clear of Hudson Falls; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service for Arthur will be held on Monday, October 16, 2017, at 2pm in the M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 136 Main Street, South Glens Falls, NY. A private burial will take place on a later date at the convenience of the family.

Donations in Arthur’s name may be made to the SPCA of Upstate New York, 588 Queensbury Avenue, Queensbury, NY 12804.
