Obituary for Joseph L. Chaplek

Joseph L. Chaplek, 101, passed away Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at Glens Falls Hospital with his family by his side.

Born March 8, 1916 in Fort Edward he was the son of the late Frank and Mary (Prinessey) Chaplek.

He graduated from Fort Edward High School class of 1933.

After high school Joe proudly joined the United States Army serving our country during World War II as a 1st Lieutenant, Squadron B 553rd AAF Base Unit. Stationed in Africa he flew and completed 35 missions over Normandy, Northern France, and Germany. Joe received multiple medals and commendations.

On July 7, 1946, Joe married the love of his life Lillian H. Lesczynski in Brooklyn, NY.

Joe was a communicant and charter member of St. Michael the Archangel Church in South Glens Falls, where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council- 11160 Rev. Robert A. Nugent Council.

He retired from Scott Paper after 33 years of service. Joe was instrumental in establishing the first environmental pollution plant in New York State at Scott Paper.

Joe enjoyed golfing, working bingo, being an usher at church, hunting, fishing, telling war stories, maintaining his home, morning coffee at South Glens Falls McDonalds with friends, and spending time with his family.

He was a member of the American Legion Mohican Post 553.

In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased by his wife, Lillian (Lesczynski) Chaplek; his sisters, Stella Yattaw, and Frances Krutka; half-sisters, Julia Zark, and Katie Evanico.

Left to cherish his memory include his children, Lawrence J. Chaplek, Joanne E. Chaplek, and Mary Beth Bain and her husband Chris Ciochini; his grandchildren, Lynette Ciochini and Corrinne Ciochini; his great grandchildren, Shawn Ciochini and Cohen Lee.

Friends and family may call from 4p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, October 20, 2017 at M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home 136 Main St. South Glens Falls, NY 12803.

A Funeral Mass will be conducted on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 10a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Church 80 Saratoga Ave. South Glens Falls, NY 12803 with Rev. Guy A. Childs officiating.

Rite of committal will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in South Glens Falls.
