Penelope Ann "Penny" Elms
Virginia Beach, VA & Town of Moreau

Penelope “Penny” Ann Elms, 66, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 18, 2018, surrounded by her loving family as “Anchors Aweigh” played softly to send her home.

Born on April 28, 1951, in Glens Falls, she was the daughter of the late Leo Francis and Beverly Jean (Cameron) Elms.

Penny was a South Glens Falls High School graduate. In 1970, she joined the United States Navy, earning the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer over a 24-year career that took her all over the world, including her favorite posting at Diego Garcia. After the Navy, she attended Saint Leo University in Florida earning her Bachelor’s Degree in History. She went on to hold several positions, her most recent one before her illness, with HRSD (Hampton Road Sanitation Department).

She was an avid amateur photographer, birdwatcher and geocacher, finding 4,300 caches across many states. She also enjoyed researching the family’s genealogy.

Left to cherish her memory include her siblings, Dennis R. Elms and his wife, Mary, David F. Elms and his wife, Janie, Margaret J. Vertichio and her husband, Joseph, Kevin C. Elms, Tracy E. Sabattis and her husband, Wayne; several nephews, nieces and cousins, as well as many close friends who loved her dearly. The family wishes to especially thank Paul Mungo, who was a caring and loving presence in her life.
