Obituary for Paul Robert Sheehan

Paul Robert Sheehan
Glen Lake

Early on the morning of May 5th, 2018, God chose to call one of the nicest guys in the world home. Paul Robert Sheehan, 76, born January 29, 1942, the third son of Frank and Cecelia McCormick Sheehan, died at his special place on Glen Lake, from complications associated with an ugly disease called Pulmonary Fibrosis. Paul, a healthy, active non-smoking man, could not stop the disease's progression, although he tried very hard. He tolerated the devastation of this illness without a single complaint.

Paul was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Cecelia McCormick Sheehan, of Fort Edward, NY, an infant daughter, Mary Jo, his brother, John, his in-laws Andrew and Harriet Smatko, brother-in-law Peter Smatko and his nephew, Christopher Alden.

Paul is survived by his wife, Margaret, devoted children, sons Mark (MiYoung) of Baltimore, Maryland, Kevin (Christina) of Brentwood, California, Peter of Queensbury, New York, and daughter Kathleen Wilson of Queensbury, New York. In addition to his wife and children, Paul is survived by his grandchildren, whom he adored, McKenna, Marcus, Casey, Drew, Benry, Lexi and Luke, two special godson’s, Tim and Michael Sheehan, his brothers, Michael and Joseph Sheehan of Glens Falls, New York, a sister and brother in-law, Patricia and William Alden of Virginia, several nieces and nephews and his many old friends and golfing buddies.

Paul graduated from Fort Edward High School in 1959, where he was a standout, three-sport athlete, playing football, shortstop in baseball and his favorite sport, basketball. He held the Fort Edward scoring record of 38 points in a game against Glens Falls only to see the record broken a week later by his good friend and neighbor Dan D’Angelico, who scored 41 against St. Mary’s. Then, the record was broken again by one of Coach Sheehan’s own players and future best friend, John Quattrocchi, with 42 points in 1968. Please note that none of these players could dunk and there was no 3 point shot.

Paul attended St. Bonaventure University and was a graduate of Albany State University, with a Master’s Degree in Education. He furthered his studies at Castleton State College, in Vermont, with a Master’s Degree in Administration. While at Albany State, Paul played both baseball and basketball and was coached by the legendary Dr. Richard Sauers.

Paul returned to his alma mater, Fort Edward, and taught history and coached basketball. He also taught and coached basketball and golf at Queensbury High School and was an administrator at BOCES in the alternative programs at both Hudson Falls and Saratoga locations.

After retiring from education, Paul began working at the DA Collins Company as a human resource officer. He worked with one of his good friends, Bill Donnelly. The family is very sure that Bill met Dad in heaven and had a tee time set for Saturday afternoon.

Paul loved golf and he worked hard at lowering his handicap. He played golf at the Tee Bird, Hiland, and Glens Falls Country Club. One of his lifelong dreams was fulfilled when he got to play golf in his native Ireland. If you were an early riser and ever visited the YMCA when it opens, chances are very good you ran into Paul exercising.

Paul worked for years at The Roaring Brook Ranch Resort and at The Pub on Glen Street. He worked at Corinth Paper Mill and Scott Paper Company and the Sheehan Insurance Agency. He worked every second job that he could to provide for his loving family.

At Paul’s request, there will be no service at this time. A special memorial tribute will be held by the family at a later date.

The family would like to thank Dr. William Borgos, Glen Anderson, PA, Fort Hudson home care nurses and all of the hospice care nurses and a special thank you to Darlene and Kalea for your kindness and caring.

A special thank you for all of the friends that took the time to call Paul, sent such thoughtful cards or brought him lunches with plenty of memorable conversations.

Our family was very fortunate to have him in our lives. We will be forever grateful.

Please, just take the time to let the people in your life know how much you love them... you will never know when you could lose them.

If a man’s life journey is measured by:
The love of your family.
The care of your friends.
The respect of your peers.
Then you, Paul Robert Sheehan, lived an amazing life and will be missed by many.
