Obituary for Helen Knox (Shields)

FORT EDWARD

Helen Knox, 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 17, 2018 at the Fort Hudson Nursing Home.

Born February 13, 1927 in Downsville, NY, she was the daughter of the late William and Caroline (Buck) Shields.

Helen worked as the secretary of the Downsville Central School for many years. She very much enjoyed music and dancing, and was known to be one of Tony DeSare’s number one fans.

In addition to her parents, Helen was predeceased by her loving companion of 50 years, Edward J. Stanton, her brothers, Raymond Shields and Stanley Shields, as well as her sisters, Ruth Kilmer and Jean Selleck.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Nancy Vernold (Vaughn), and Kathy Hastings (Bill), her grandchildren; Stephanie Harwood, Kristopher Vernold (Beth), Jason Hastings (Lisa), and Meredith Hastings, and her great-grandchildren; Emma Harwood, Andrew Vernold, Laura Vernold, Shae Scanlan, and Maliyah Abdulai.

At Helen’s request there will be no calling hours. Arrangements are in the care of the M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 82 Broadway, Fort Edward, NY 12828.

A graveside service will be conducted at 12:00pm on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at the Paige Cemetery, Downsville, NY.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff of B-Wing at the Fort Hudson Nursing Home for their dedicated and loving care of Helen during her stay there. They also wish to thank the Community Hospice of Saratoga for their care and compassion.
