SOUTH GLENS FALLS – Daryl Howland Fowler of South Glens Falls passed away on April 8, 2021 surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on March 30, 1942 in Glens Falls to Helen Marie (Saville) Fowler and Howland Fowler. Daryl was one of three children.
Daryl was raised in South Hartford, NY and graduated from Hartford Central School. Daryl was very close to his mother Marie, who raised him and his two sisters alone after Howland passed when Daryl was four years old. Daryl was active in school choir and band where he played the trombone and he was a member of the basketball team. After high school, Daryl attended Alderson Broaddus University in Philippi, West Virginia where he studied business.
Upon his return home, he was drafted and enlisted in the US Navy where he served as an Aviation Machinist’s Mate on the Aircraft Carrier USS Wasp (CVS-18) between 1967 and 1970. During that time, he was a member of Naval Choir and served until his honorable discharge. Shortly after returning home from the Navy, Daryl married his loving wife Jessica Hanna at the South Hartford Congregational Church on August 15, 1970. This kicked off what would be a 50-year marriage where they shared love for antiquing, travel, and family.
Daryl seemed to know someone everywhere he went, likely due to his varied occupations and entrepreneurial pursuits through the years. Daryl worked for a number of years for the Armour Meat Company in Glens Falls moving sides of beef from rail cars, working as a butcher, and delivery route driver. For a period of time, he ran Fowler’s Country Market, a deli, butcher shop and grocery store in South Hartford. He was always ready to make a buck, and for one or two holiday seasons, he even tried his hand selling Christmas trees on the roadside from the back of his truck. He hand cut them himself, paying $5 per tree and sold them at the roadside from the back of his truck for $15.
Daryl became an auctioneer by purchasing a study-at-home vinyl record and under the tutelage of his father-in-law Howard Hanna. Daryl, Howard and his brother in-law Donald Hanna worked as the Family Auction & Appraisal Service, and Daryl would later operate his own Auction Service and Antique Stores under Fowler’s Country Antiques. Many people locally new Daryl from his auctions and his love and knowledge of antiques and collectibles. Daryl’s longest tenure however, was working for Gibson Hardware Co. in Hartford and Greenwich, New York and supporting the growth of their DeLaval line of milking equipment throughout Washington, Saratoga, and Rensselaer counties and the western counties of Vermont. Daryl kept the books, answered phones, and was at times the route truck driver, which were the most fun days for his sons to tag-along on.
He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hudson Falls for over 40 years where he sang in the choir, served as an elder, and was a member of numerous committees through the years. In 2008 he was voted man of the year, by the Church’s Men’s Association, for his contributions to the Church. Daryl was also a long-time member of the Masonic Lodge in Hartford.
Daryl loved spending time with his family and friends. Annual summer trips to Lake St. Catherine, VT and spring trips to Myrtle Beach, SC, as well as numerous other outings, were cherished times. Daryl loved traveling: from his time visiting ports of call while in the Navy, to the Scottish Festival in Fergus, Ontario, Canada in his motorhome, through his retirement when he spent time in New Orleans, Hawaii, Scotland, Ireland, Paris and Italy. No matter the destination, far or near, he was always ready to go and he would always find an antique store worth checking out on the way.
Daryl was a loving father and was so proud of his sons. His greatest joy was spending time with them and his five grandchildren. Daryl is survived by his loving wife, Jessica, of 50 years; his sister Corrine Fowler; his twin sister Darlene Fowler; his sons Seth (Heather) Fowler and Josh (Erin) Fowler; and his grandchildren Lily, Kate, Griffin, Claire and Samuel. He also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
At. Daryl’s request there will be no calling hours.
