Obituary for Doris B. Gardner

South Glens Falls

Doris B. Gardner, 99, passed away on Thursday, October 19, 2023, at the Home of the Good Shepherd.

Born on August 21, 1924, in Schenectady, she is the daughter of the late Arthur and Helen (Collins) Barnett. Doris went to school at the Little Troy Schoolhouse and she worked on the family farm.

Doris is a 1941 graduate of Burnt Hills. She worked for General Electric and for over 24 years at the South Glens Falls School District as a health office aide.

On March 21, 1948, Doris married the love of her life, Robert Gardner, at the Scotia Methodist Church. She was an active member of the South Glens Falls United Methodist Church, where she serviced on several committees. Doris donated a lot of her time to several different organizations. She prepared dressings for cancer patients, knitted prayer shawls, and sewn quilts when needed. For more than 20 years, Doris delivered “Home-Delivered Meals” and volunteered at the Moreau Community Center Thrift Store. Fun, outgoing, and friendly, Doris Gardner has touched many lives with her willingness to help others.

Doris has been involved in innumerable volunteer activities, especially in her Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school, and has been a Youth Group Leader, member of the Methodist Women’s Group, and Bereavement Committee.

In addition to her parents, Doris is predeceased by; her sister, Eleanor Weller and her husband, Elbert Weller; her son-in-law, Hugh Hurst.

Left to cherish her memory include her husband of 75 years, Robert; her children, Jane Hurst, Claudia Gardner; her grandchildren, Kendall Long and his partner Melissa Stinson, Benjamin (Helena) Long, Shayna Shazam, Gideon (Krissy) Bein; her great grandchildren, Nichele (Fritz) Beyer, Quiana Chittenden, Blayze Chittenden, Kody Kitching; her great-great grandchildren, Jordin, Layton, and Emma Beyer; and along with several nieces and cousins.

Friends and family may call from 2pm to 3pm on Sunday, October 29, 2023, at the M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 136 Main Street, South Glens Falls NY 12803.

A service will follow calling hours.

Burial will be private and to the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations in Doris’s memory can be made to the Moreau Community Center, 144 Main Street, South Glens Falls NY 12803.
