Obituary for Dorothy M. Fitzgerald (Dixon)

Dorothy M. Fitzgerald (Dixon)
GLENS FALLS -

Dorothy M. (Dixon) Fitzgerald, 95, of Locust St., Glens Falls, passed away at Glens Falls Hospital Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010, one day short of her 96th birthday, and surrounded by her loving family.
Born Aug. 13, 1914, she was the eldest daughter of Charles H. and Josephine (Newton) Dixon. She attended Hudson Falls High School, graduating in 1933.
She worked as a cashier at the F. W. Woolworth Co. for several years. During the 1940s she was employed as a cashier for the National Bread Co. in Glens Falls, retiring in 1951.
On May 12, 1951 she married Charles J. Fitzgerald of Olean, N.Y., at St. Mary’s Church in Glens Falls. She remained a faithful communicant of that parish throughout her life.
Dorothy came out of retirement in 1964 to be the office manager at Warren Anesthesiologists, P.C., retiring in 1986.
She was Past President and an honorary member of the American Assoc. of Medical Assistants; a member of St. Mary’s Church; a member of the Girl Scouts of America; and a member of the Greater Glens Falls Senior Citizens.
Dorothy enjoyed knitting, sewing, baking (we’ll always remember her delicious fudge and her scrumptious Kahlua pie), and the occasional Manhattan. Throughout her daughters’ pre-teen and teen years she provided fanciful and beautiful birthday cakes, and sewed her daughters the latest in fashionable clothes. In 1964 after seeing the Beatles’ movie, “A Hard Day’s Night,” her girls announced that they couldn’t live without the exact miniskirt seen in the movie. Dorothy found a pattern and the identical fabric and whipped up the skirts within days!
Anyone knowing Dorothy knew to avoid interrupting her whenever there was a Mets game on! She was an avid and loyal fan.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, “Fitz,” in July, 1975; and by her son-in-law, Joseph D. Nolan, in March, 2008.
Survivors include her daughter, JoAnn Nolan of So. Glens Falls; her daughter, Sheila Red, of Antelope, Calif.; her granddaughter Magdelana Mae Red and her husband Grant Swanson, of Denver, Colo.; her granddaughter Ashley Nicole Nolan and her fiancé Keith Lotich, of So. Glens Falls; her sisters, Mrs. Frances Pringle and Miss Irene Dixon, both of Kingsbury; several special nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, great grandnieces and great grandnephews, cousins, and wonderful friends. Also surviving is her lifelong best friend, Mrs. Eileen Weldon of Glens Falls.
Family and friends may call at the Kilmer Funeral Home, 136 Main St., So. Glens Falls, on Sunday, Aug. 15, from 3 to 6 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be con-celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 16, at St. Mary’s Church on Warren St. by Rev. Marty Fisher and Rev. Joseph Gough. The Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery where Dorothy will be laid to rest next to her husband.
Those wishing to make contributions in Dorothy’s memory may do so to St. Mary’s Church Foundation, 62 Warren St., Glens Falls, NY 12801, or to Fisher House (a support facility for hospitalized veterans and their families), 113 Holland Ave., Albany, NY 12208.
