Dorothy (Root) Shea, age 96, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 4, 2013 at the Glens Falls Hospital. She was born on October 25, 1916 in Schenectady, NY and was the daughter of the late Kathleen and George Root.

Dorothy moved to the Glens Falls area in her teen years and graduated from South Glens Falls Senior High School in 1935. She married Edward Shea on June 1, 1940 in St. Mary’s Church in Glens Falls. They had two children – Kathleen and Michael. Prior to her marriage she worked at the Glens Falls Insurance Company, and in 1959 she returned to work at the South Glens Falls Junior High School as a study hall aide, and retired in 1977.

Dorothy was a long time member of St. Michael the Archangel Church in South Glens Falls, and for many years she was a Eucharist Minister, a member of the Bereavement Team, and helped with bingo.

Dorothy and her husband, Eddie, loved golf and played many years at the Tee-Bird Country Club. They enjoyed travelling across the United States by car and also took trips to Ireland and Hawaii. They were both excellent dancers and belonged to the Cosmopolitan Dinner and Dance Club. And Dottie was an avid bridge player for well over 50 years.

Following Eddie’s death in 1999, Dottie continued to travel – visiting the Mediterranean and Panama Canal with friends and taking a cruise with her grandson, Michael, to Alaska.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Edward; her son, Michael, who was called by the Lord much to young and desperately missed and loved by his family; and her daughter-in-law, Peggy LaBrum.

Dorothy is survived by her loving daughter, Kathleen Kottman, and her husband Scott of South Glens Falls; her grandson, Michael Shea, and his wife, Erica, of Queensbury.; and her cousins, Mary Rice of Glens Falls and Ed Carey of Whitesboro, NY.

At Dorothy’s request, there will be no calling hours. There will be a funeral mass at St. Michael’s Church in South Glens Falls on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013 at 2 p.m. Following the service there will be a bereavement luncheon in the Parish Hall.

Burial will be private at a date to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, Dorothy had requested donations in her name be made to St. Michael the Archangel Church, 80 Saratoga Avenue, South Glens Falls, NY 12803.
