Evelyn Rose (Guardyak) Cirino, 92, passed away on June 3, 2014 at The Stanton Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center.
Born in Whitehall, NY on September 12, 1921, Evelyn was the daughter of the late Stephen W. Guardyak and Rose (Greenwood) Guardyak. She graduated from Whitehall High School and in 1942, completed her studies to become a Registered Nurse at the Rutland Hospital School of Nursing.
Evelyn began her career as a pediatric nurse at Glens Falls Hospital before enlisting in the Army Nurse Corps in 1945 at the end of World War II, where she served in Korea and at Fort Dix, New Jersey, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant She was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. Returning to work at Glens Falls Hospital, Evelyn completed many years of service; her final working years were spent on the Post Coronary Care Floor. In her later years, Evelyn resided at the Cronin Hi-Rise Apartments where she enjoyed many good times with her fellow residents and friends. Evelyn enjoyed travel, reading, crafts and was a member of many area Senior Citizen groups. She was also a charter member of St. Mary’s/St. Paul’s Rosary Altar Society, and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, and the Glens Falls Hospital Guild.
In addition to her parents, Evelyn was predeceased by her brother Richard Guardyak and son-in-law Dr. Chalmers Lyons.
A devoted mother and grandmother, Evelyn is survived by her four children: Rose Mary Lyons of Syracuse, NY; Evelyn (Thomas) Donohue of Glens Falls, NY; William (Debra) Cirino of Hartford, NY and Theresa (Paul) Fink of Latham, NY. She cherished her five grandchildren: Christina (Julian King) Lyons, John (Deirdre) Donohue, Richard Lyons, Maggie (Luke) Kelly and Bethany (Danny) Camp; and three great-grandchildren: Liam Thomas Donohue, Nora Lee Donohue, and Nolan Chalmers King. She is also survived by a sister, Patricia (Lucien) LeClaire of Clemons, NY, a sister-in-law, Ina Guardyak of McCollum Lake, IL, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 am on Monday, June 9, 2014 at the Church of St. Mary’s/St.Paul’s, On the Circle in Hudson Falls NY, with Rev. Thomas Babiuch officiating.
Interment will follow at 11am with full military honors at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY.

The family would like to express its heartfelt appreciation to the staff at the Stanton for the unparalleled care and support that they gave to our mother during her stay there. Without exception, every member of the staff treated her with dignity, respect and affection. She loved you all. Thanks also to her advocate and guardian angel, Patricia Ross, who guided us all in helping our mother make the transition to the nursing home.
