Mr. F. David McCauley Sr., of South Hartford, New York died unexpectedly and immediately from injuries sustained after suffering a fall while on winter vacation in Vero Beach, Florida March 7, 2003.

Mr. McCauley, who was the son of the late Fred and Beatrice Gibson McCauley, South Hartford, born on March 28, 1936 in Granville.

He was a graduate of Hartford Central School, received his bachelors’ degree in Physical Education from Ithaca College & his Graduate Certificate and Directors Certificate for Health, Physical Education & Recreation from Springfield College, Springfield, Mass.

During Coach McCauley’s career in secondary school athletics and education he served as Athletic Director, Director of Physical Education, Recreation & Health, taught Physical Education & coached in the New York State Public Schools of: Saratoga County BOCES, Schuylerville Central School, Stillwater Central School, Little Falls City Schools, Olean City Schools, South Lewis Central Schools and lastly Pine Plains Central Schools.

During his 37 year celebrated career as an educator and coach, Mr. McCauley was bestowed with the following honors:

• Holds The record number of victories for State of New York in Boys Track and Field, 400 wins, 75 losses.
• Named Track & Field Coach-of-the-Year for Region I (New England & New York) and was one of eight National Finalist for National Coach-of-the-Year awarded by the US National Coaches Association, 1989.
• Named New York State Track Coach-of-the-Year 1989 & 1993.
• Named Boys’ Track & Field Outstanding Coach by the National Federation of Interscholastic Coaches Assoc. 1990
• Selected to coach the Section III High School Football All Star Game, 1992 & 1994

• Named Frontier League Football Coach-of-the-Year 1990.
• Named Iroquois League Football Coach-of-the-Year 1968.
• Nominated for New York State Athletic Director-of-the-Year, 1975-76.

And Team Honors:
• Coached 39 undefeated League, or Sectional Varsity Championship Teams in Track & Field, Football, Basketball and Baseball.
• 15 Sportsmanship awards.

Mr. McCauley’s Credo as an educator and community leader was that everyone received equal treatment and opportunities regardless of their background. He was a religious father & husband who attended services at [2] separate parishes each Sunday for the last 38 years of his life. His favorite story from scripture was that of the “Good Samaritan” and lived his life with that as his model. His favorite hymn was “Let there be Peace on Earth.”

Mr. McCauley achieved much success personally and professionally despite much adversity that included coming back to walk & work after suffering a broken neck and quadraparalysis in a farm accident in 1974.

His greatest love was the education of youth and his greatest prize their success. He will be remembered by all as an honest, bright, successful & hard-working man with a passion for life.

After 37 years of teaching, Mr. McCauley retired to the family farm in Hartford, New York, where he continued to cut & sell hay and grow produce sold and trucked from the foothills of the Adirondacks to the State of Vermont as he had done with his family since 1976.

He was pre-deceased by a brother Roderick, and a daughter, Catherine Anne.

Mr. McCauley married Natalie (Noonan) on August 18, 1962.

Survivors besides his wife of 40 years include, 3 daughters Lisa Eastman, of Adams, NY, Mary Snyder, of Tilton, NH and Cary Beth Devine, of Middlesex, NJ and a son, F. David McCauley, Jr., of Watertown, NY, brother Henry Hayes, of Lake Placid, FL, sisters Rachel Quackenbush of Hudson Falls, Margaret Wilkinson & Jennifer McCauley of the Capital District, and 5 grandchildren and countless student/athletes.

Friends may call from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8pm Thursday (March 13, 2003) at the M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 82 Broadway, Fort Edward NY.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 am Friday (March 14, 2003) at the South Hartford Congregational Church, Route 40, Hartford with the Rev. Michael Richards, pastor, officiating and the Rev. David LeFort, pastor of St. Phillips Mission of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, co-officiating.

Burial will be in the spring in Morningside Cemetery, Hartford.
