Obituary for Frederic Nettleton "Fred" Bingham

Frederic Nettleton "Fred" Bingham
Frederic Nettleton Bingham

Following a long illness Fred Bingham passed to the arms of the angels on Thursday, December 3, 2015.

Born July 12, 1950 in Bridgeport, CT, Fred was a lover of the outdoors and a creative, sensitive and adventurous soul. He cultivated his love of nature and plants roaming the woods of Westport, Ct. as a child.

In 1969 he graduated from the Sterling School of Craftsbury Common, VT. where he was an accomplished member of the cross country ski team.

As an adult Fred lived in New Orleans and later New York City, where he first co-owned a nursery in Greenwich Village. Fred contracted HIV in the 1980’s. He was on the front lines of the early AIDS epidemic where he lost many friends and partners. His mission at the onset of his own HIV diagnosis was to become educated and active. An early experience with AIDS drugs led him to alternative treatments and he founded a non-profit organization Direct Access Alternative Information Resources (DAAIR). As a recognized early AIDS pioneer he testified before Congress in Washington D.C., collaborated with researchers in Houston and Paris, and had an article published in SPIN magazine.

In 2014, Fred moved to Glens Falls NY where he planned a simple life of gardening and watching old movies.

Fred is survived by his sisters Sarah Bingham (wife Teresa Haller) of Charlottesville, VA; and Saundra DeVos and her children Whitney and Spencer DeVos of South Pasadena, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents Perry and Emma Lou Bingham.

At Fred’s request, there will be no calling hours. Services are private and at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are in the care of the M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 136 Main Street, South Glens Falls, NY 12803. To leave online condolences or to view Fred’s Book of Memories, please visit www.kilmerfuneralhome.com.

The family wishes to recognize and thank Mark Petrie of Glens Falls, NY for his kindness, support and advocacy on Fred’s behalf during his time in Glens Falls, NY.
