George William Churchill, 89, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 4, 2013 at Fort Hudson Nursing Home, Fort Edward.

Born October 16, 1923 in Schenectady, he was the son of the late George W. Churchill Sr and Marion (Fish) Churchill Winkle.

George was a Veteran of the United States Army, where he served his country proudly, became a Technician Fifth Grade and was awarded the World War II Victory Medal. Adept with machines and at tinkering, George became a long-time employee of Queensbury Motors and a dependable neighborhood handy-man.

On May 22, 1951, George married the love of his life, Ruth McGeoch in Lake George.

Always a lover of music and theater, in his young adult life, George was active in the Glens Falls Operetta Club, serving on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee. He frequently listened to music and could often be hears singing or whistling a favorite tune. He was an avid stamp and coin collector all his life. George loved gardening, especially growing roses so his wife might enjoy a rose each day during the summers.

In addition to his parents, George is predeceased by an infant daughter, and a son, Spencer Churchill.

Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife of 61 years, Ruth Churchill, daughter, Janet Spielberger and husband Dr. Michael of Queensbury, son, Kevin Churchill of Rochester, grandchildren, Todd Spielberger of Marietta, GA, Jessica Romero and husband Daniel of Brooklyn, Mariah Shelton and husband Michael, Dustin Churchill and wife Kim and Keaton Churchill all of Portland, OR and one great-grandchild, Emmeline Shelton.

George's family would like to express special thanks to the staff of Fort Hudson Nursing Home and of High Peaks Hospice for their tremendous care and compassion, as well as to Tenille Sanders for her limitless patience and extraordinary dedication.

A Memorial Service will be conducted at 12 Noon Saturday, following the calling hours.

Burial will be in the spring in Saint Alphonsus Cemetery, Queensbury.
