Obituary for Gerard Gerry Broderick

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Gerard “Gerry” Broderick, 95, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 12, 2014, at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Murray and Judy Broderick in Phoenix, Ariz.

Gerry was born Aug. 2, 1918, in Ellenburg Depot, N.Y.

An avid reader, Gerry graduated in 1939 from Plattsburgh Normal School as a teacher. Gerry taught school one year in Hudson Falls, where he met his future wife Anne “Nan” McCurry. Nan and Gerry were married for 62 years until Nan’s passing in 2004. The family home was on Marion Street in Fort Edward, where they raised their four children. After the one year of teaching, Gerry became and auto body mechanic, then completed his working years as a foreman/manager at General Electric in Fort Edward.

During World War II, Gerry had some hair-raising experiences as a flight mechanic on missions mostly down the East Coast from the Carolinas to Cuba. For this reason and in light of his reserved yet strong persona, we call him our “quiet hero.”

Gerry was also a volunteer firefighter for the Satterlee Hose Company and a Little League coach. Gerry loved sports and was a frequent golfer at the Tee-Bird Country Club. After Nan’s passing, Gerry spent his retirement years between homes in Queensbury and Phoenix, Ariz.

Besides his wife, Nan, Gerry was predeceased by his sister, Rita, and brothers, Bernard and Robert.

He is survived by his four children, (Dr.) Margie Kesler (Jerry) of Phoenix, Ariz., Murray Broderick (Judy) of Queensbury, Phil Broderick (Joanne) of Peru and Dennis Broderick (Janice) of Reston, Va.; his grandchildren include, Lisa, Chris, Kelly, Kate, Patrick, Brian, Kevin B., Michael, Peter, Christine, Kevin K. and Casey; as well as 11 great-grandchildren and another on the way!

Our Dad’s legacy will be the love of family, strength of character, kindness to all, and loving life to the fullest, 95 years worth in his case!

A Graveside service will be conducted in Gerry’s honor, 12 Noon, Aug. 2, 2014 (his 96th birthday) at Union Cemetery in Fort Edward with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fort Edward Free Library 23 East Street, Fort Edward, NY 12828.
