Obituary for James A. Lane

Glenmont
James A. Lane, 72, passed away at his home in Glenmont, NY on Monday, November 30, 2015. He was the son of James W. Lane and Celia R. (Laporte) Lane. He was born in Schenectady and grew up in Delanson.

After graduating from Schalmont High School, James joined the U.S. Coast Guard for five years. He trained as an Electronics Technician and had an opportunity to serve his country and travel the world. Upon his discharge from the U.S. Coast Guard he returned to upstate NY and attended SUNY Plattsburgh, where he received B.S. and M.S. degrees in Education. In addition James earned a Master’s degree in Library Science from the University at Albany.

For many years he worked at several different academic and research libraries across New York State. In 2005 he retired from the New York State Research Library where he had worked for 20 years.

He was active in many professional organizations and photography clubs. Also, he was a longtime member of the Northeastern Woodworkers’ Association. Throughout his life James enjoyed renovating houses and woodworking projects. Among his many projects were the completions of a handmade guitar, flute and jewelry box.

James was predeceased by his parents, James W. Lane and Celia R. Lane, as well as his older sister, Mary Jane Jones.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Elizabeth (Viele) Lane; daughter, Amy Lane Grant (Michael Grant); granddaughters Emily and Allison Grant. Additionally, James is survived by his sister, Judith Hammond (Douglas), brother-in-law Ralph Jones, Uncle Norman Laporte (Ardis), nieces, nephews and many cousins.

A celebration of James’s life will follow calling hours at 12pm at the funeral home.

Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
