Jean M. Smith, 93, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 21, 2013 at Westmount Nursing Facility.

Born in Flushing, NY on Feb. 5, 1920 in a snowstorm, she was the daughter of the late George and Elvera (Mundy) Murray.

She graduated from Barnard College in 1941. In 1942, she married Stuart S. Smith, who joined the United States Air Force in 1942. They raised four children in many locations in the U.S. and abroad.

Jean joined the faculty of the Cathedral School of St. Mary’s in Garden City, NY in 1960 and received her master’s degree from Adelphi University in 1968. She taught biology, anthropology and other life sciences for many years and was the head of her department at retirement in 1985. Jean enjoyed her students and was happiest in the classroom. She was a keen observer of the natural world and especially liked watching the progression of the seasons.

Besides her parents, Jean is predeceased by her husband, Stuart Smith and her brother, Donald Murray.

She is survived by her children, Janet F. Gobeille, Douglas M. Smith and partner Barb Kuhns, Kathryn M. Neale and husband Gordon, and Gregory R. Smith and wife Silvana, seven grandchildren, Denise, Deirdre, Justin, Erica, Emily, Emma, and Baker, four great grandchildren, Callahan, Cassidy, Nicholas, and Witt.

A funeral service will be conducted at 6pm on Wednesday June 26 at M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 82 Broadway, Fort Edward, NY 12828 with Rev. Ray Stees, pastor of Queensbury United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
