Obituary for Jeanne M Chien

Jeanne M Chien
Fort Edward
Jeanne M. Chien, 88, passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer’s on December 7, 2015 at the Fort Hudson Nursing Center, Fort Edward, NY.

Jeanne was born on January 2, 1927 in Glens Falls; she was the daughter of, Blanche Wells and Glen Beardsley.

Jeanne grew up in South Glens Falls and was a graduate of South Glens Falls High School.

Upon her marriage to Maurice “Maish” Lebowitz at age 20, she moved across the river and ultimately settled in her home on Lake Avenue in Glens Falls, where she lived for more than 60 years. Jeanne was married to Maish for 24 years and then to Alan Chien for another 24 years.

She was a mainstay of the Glens Falls Operetta Club, predecessor to the Glens Falls Community Theater. Appearing in leading roles in many different productions over a span of more than twenty five years, her signature role was as Dolly Levi in “Hello Dolly” in November 1978. She was the first actor to ever play the role of Mrs. Shubert in the initial production of the play “Shear Madness” at the Lake George Dinner Theater, a play which has since been performed all over the world and which is currently the longest running play in America, having been performed continuously for more than 36 years at the Charles Playhouse in Boston. She shined on the stage and loved the people who shared it with her.

Jeanne was very industrious, always cooking, sewing and fixing things. She was a true magician with a glue gun. She also loved the outdoors. She would take the whole family on camping trips which were measured in weeks rather than days. She skied, ice skated, swam and spent hours tending her garden and arranging bouquets of flowers that she grew and then gave away.

Jeanne never looked back. She was a woman without regrets who always found joy in the present. Those lucky enough to have known her will feel her laughter and her love forever.

Jeanne is survived by her three children and their spouses; Mark and Lisa (Cardish) Lebowitz; Meryl Lebowitz and David Tanych and Matthew and Justine (Leombruno) Lebowitz; her seven grandchildren, Craig (Emily), Andrew and Molly Lebowitz, Benjamin and Graham Keegan and Jane and Jillian Lebowitz.

At Jeanne’s request there will be no calling hours. Arrangements are in the care of M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 136 Main St. South Glens Falls, NY 12803. To view Jeanne’s Book of Memories and to post online condolences, please visit our website at www.kilmerfuneralhome.com.
