Obituary for Joan Mullen

Fort Edward

Joan Hess Mullen of Fort Edward died May 6, 2021 at Wesley Health Care Center, Saratoga Springs.

She was born in Oneonta, NY on December 14, 1927, the daughter of Franklin and Muriel (Gordon) Hess of Gilboa in Schoharie County. She attended Gilboa Central School for 12 years, graduating in 1945. She then entered Plattsburgh State Teachers College (now SUNY Plattsburgh), and graduated on June 13, 1949; that same day she married Charles Thomas Mullen at St. John’s Rectory in Plattsburgh. They were married for 61 years.

Joan taught in Keeseville Central School and Hartford Central School as a Home Economics teacher. She then taught at Fort Edward Schools as a corrective-reading teacher. She was a member and secretary of the Fort Edward Library Association, the Fort Edward branch of the Glens Falls Hospital Guild and was organist and choir member of the former Fort Edward Methodist Church. Joan authored six family genealogies, and with her husband co-authored books on genealogical histories of the Irish and French immigrants to Fort Edward, the Fort Edward Idle hour Club, and a history of Drum Corps in the village. She was a member of the Fort Edward and Gilboa historical societies.

Joan Mullen was predeceased by her parents, her sister Barbara Hess Patierne of Schenectady, her husband Charles Thomas Mullen, who died in 2010, and her son Patrick Michael Mullen who died in September of 2016.

Surviving is her son Peter Hess Mullen of Connecticut, a daughter Ann-Melissa Sarah VanEarden and her husband Harold VanEarden of Gansevoort, her daughter-in-law, Jeanie Mullen; three grandchildren: Zachary James VanEarden and his fiancé Lucy Rivas of Saratoga, Benjamin Charles VanEarden and his fiancé Brandy Kotary of Saratoga, and Rachel Melissa VanEarden of Saratoga, and several Mullen and Patierne nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 4:00 to 6:00pm on Monday, May 10, 2021 at the M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 82 Broadway, Fort Edward, NY 12828. Due to Covid restrictions, only 60 people may enter the funeral home at once. Masks and social distancing are required.

Graveside service will be conducted on Tuesday, May 11, 2021 at 11:00am at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Fort Edward.
