QUEENSBURY - Joyce A. Reid of Queensbury passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 9th at Glens Falls Hospital. Born on December 7, 1935 in Fort Edward, Joyce was the daughter of the late Henry F. and Margaret (Pratt) Reid.

Joyce was predeceased by her two sisters, Lois Farrell and her husband Kenneth and Marjorie Ely and her husband Roscoe, her brother Robert Reid Sr. and his wife Joanne, her nephews Leonard Ely, Robert Reid Jr. and John Ely, her great niece, Suzanne Murphy, and her great-great niece Cora Murphy.

Joyce was an accomplished scholar. She graduated as valedictorian from Hartford Central School in 1953. She was a pioneer for women as she attended the University of Rochester where she was a member of one of the first classes to allow women to enroll in the science programs, as well as the first class of women given the opportunity to reside in dormitories on campus. She graduated with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Chemistry receiving highest honors and accolades along the way.

Joyce was fiercely independent and exceptionally humble. Very few knew of her many accomplishments. After college, Joyce ventured out on her own and settled in New Jersey, where she worked as a research chemist for over 35 years for Bristol Myers Squibb until her retirement. She loved her job and was admired by her coworkers, remaining in contact with many during her retirement. She was a major contributor to several medications taken by thousands across the globe today. She held 35 patents and wrote countless papers during her career. She began her career working on solid rocket fuels but transitioned to pharmaceuticals, as she felt a strong calling to help mankind. After retirement Joyce moved to Queensbury, NY to be closer to her family and her hometown roots. There she became and has remained a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Glens Falls.

Joyce made friends everywhere she went. With her quick wit and sarcastic humor, she could always be counted on for endless hours of entertainment, even bringing laughter to her final days on earth. Her friendships span the globe and her lifetime. She cherished her trips to Japan to spend time with the Nakane family, her time with her exercise group at the gym as recently as this past spring, and her frequent trips to “The Cape” with her dear friends – Helen, Faye, and Nancy. She was known to travel far and wide to gather the best chocolates for family holiday parties as well as the purest of maple syrup, a staple gift every Christmas. Her passion for berry picking was second to none and was appreciated by the many recipients of the fruits of her labor. And NO one could belt out a better rendition of the Texaco Theme Song.

Joyce had a large extended family who absolutely adored her. Survivors include her nieces Deborah Bardin, Florence Ely (Leonard Ely), Gwen Ely (John Ely), Linda Reid (Robert Reid Jr.), and Lois Thurber. She was affectionately “Auntie” to so many including her great-nieces and great-nephews and their children Kelly Mercure (Annabelle and Thomas), Sarah Lindsell (Carson), Jacob Reid, Steven Reid, Daniel Reid, Andrew Ely (Aiden, Emily, Madeline), Kelly Murphy (Rory, Kyan, Crosby, Breanna and Ares), Cynthia Filliatreault (Evan), Joe Ely (Nate), Christina Milliman, Jacqueline Geiss (Mallory and Jacob), Marjorie Shipley (Caitlin, T.J., and Olivia), and Roscoe Thurber.

A Graveside Service will be conducted at 11 am on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Argyle.
