Obituary for Lawrence K. Gillis

Fort Edward -

Lawrence K. Gillis, 65, of Notre Dame St. passed away at his home on Thursday, February 25, 2010 with his family at his side.

Born in Glens Falls, on January 22, 1945 he was the son of the late Kenneth and Ruth E. (Evans) Gillis.

While attending Fort Edward High school he enlisted in 1963 in the Naval Reserves and upon graduating in 1964 he became an enlisted member of the U.S. Navy serving until Feb. 21, 1966. On October 1, 1965, Larry married Margaret Durller at St. Joseph's church in Fort Edward. He worked for Decora for 11 years and spent the last 30 years with Finch Pruyn in Glens Falls as a core man retiring in 2007. While his sons were in Little League, Larry was an active coach for the Fort Edward Little League. One of his greatest talents was playing guitar and he enjoyed sharing his talent with his many friends and with the residents at local nursing homes. He was a member of the Chaplain Blue Grass Association and his hobbies included, camping, fishing, gardening and woodworking. He enjoyed spending time with his family especially watching his grandchildren play ball.

Larry was a loving husband, father, brother and friend. His survivors besides his wife of 44 years include his sons: Stephen L. Gillis and wife Kathleen, Todd M. Gillis and wife Lynn, and Scott J. Gillis and wife Laura all of Fort Edward; six grandchildren, Kyle S. Gillis, Shelby N. Gillis, Timothy M. Gillis, Logan T. Gillis, Aidan S. Gillis, and Ryan G. Gillis; his sister, Sandra Wilkins and husband William of Gansevoort; his brother, Leonard Gillis and wife Therese of Fort Edward; his aunt and uncle, Doris Hurley and husband Raymond of Hudson Falls, his brothers-in-law, James T. Durller and wife Melinda of Fort Edward, George J. Durller and wife Margaret of Boise, Idaho; and several nieces, nephews and cousins and his special friend, Lou Stausser of Lake George.

At Larry's request there will be no calling hours.

Memorial services will be conducted 11:00am Friday, March 5, 2010 at the South Glens Falls United Methodist Church, 15 Maplewood Parkway, South Glens Falls, with Rev. Kelly Warner, pastor, officiating.

Following the services a reception will be held at the church in the fellowship hall.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Center, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105-1942
