Obituary for Marilyn Althea Babich (Watson)
Marilyn Althea Watson Babich, 91, passed away on January 30, 2019, at The Pines in Glens Falls, NY. Born on August 20, 1927, in New Rochelle, NY, she was the only child of the late Parker Leslie and Clara Elizabeth (Hartwig) Watson. Marilyn graduated from the Edgewood School in Greenwich, CT in 1945 where she was senior class president and editor of the school paper. She went on to receive her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Connecticut College in New London, CT.
In 1952 Marilyn married Robert James Breschel. She married Samuel Babich, Jr. in 1962. Marilyn and Sam moved to Glens Falls for a time. They next lived in Saranac Lake, NY. Sam had a desire to go to California. They travelled across the country together with their beloved German Shepherd dog, Bear. They shared the driving and taking in the sights along the way.
Through the years, Marilyn worked many different jobs. She was a case worker and/or agent for two different welfare agencies in Westchester County. She also held several positions using her excellent organizational, secretarial, and proofreading skills in NYC, Saranac Lake, NY and in California. After her divorce from Sam she moved back to the Glens Falls area doing secretarial work for Jeckel & Sons Equipment Corp. and proofreading for TV Data. She retired in 1979, returning to Larchmont, NY in order to care for her aging parents. She later returned to this area.
She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Glens Falls since 1988. She served on the Social Action Committee, the Board of Trustees as Secretary and then Treasurer, and later the Finance Committee.
Marilyn valued her independence, living alone until medical concerns led to a need for hospitalization in November. Despite having some challenging health issues, she never was one to indulge in heavy complaining. She was appreciative and didn’t like to impose on others.
Among the interests that Marilyn enjoyed were music, going to concerts and watching TV, especially WMHT programs. She loved animals. She enjoyed reading her magazines, The Progressive, The Washington Spectator, and The Hightower Lowdown. She was mentally sharp and intellectually curious. Marilyn enjoyed her sweets, especially dark chocolate and carrot cake. Her hair remained brunette without dye, and she kept her feisty sense of humor.
Marilyn appreciated her friendships and also her relationships with family. For several years she drove to visit Sam’s sister, Dorothy Scholz, who lived in NJ. She stayed in contact with Sam’s cousin-in-law, Doris Doetsch, and a friend, Marjorie Fee Neff, both of whom now live in the Carolinas. She will be missed by members of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, particularly Elayne Leonelli who respected Marilyn’s desire to be independent while gently caring for her needs as she grew older.
There will be a memorial service at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Glens Falls, 21 Weeks Rd., Queensbury, NY on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be private and at a later time in the spring.
