Obituary for Marjorie R. Clifton (Larou)

Marjorie R. Clifton (Larou)
Hartford -
A golden heart stopped beating at the Glens Falls Hospital on Monday, February 15, 2010 when Marjorie R. Clifton, 85, of Old Mill Lane, Hartford, peacefully left our world.

Born June 20, 1924 in Cannes, France she was the daughter of the late Rene and Dorothy (Landor) Larou.

Marjorie was a World War II Free French Air Force Veteran. She was stationed in Morocco, serving under General Martial Valin as Chief Secretary for three years. Marjorie also acted as an interpreter for Charles de Gaulle.

While in the military she met and married her husband, James "Bernard" McCarthy Clifton. The couple moved to the United States 1957, residing in Red Bank and Clifton, New Jersey while working together on their scientific pursuits.

In 1964 Marjorie and Bernard founded their home business in Hartford, NY: Clifton Technical Physics. They patented and produced the Clifton Nanoliter Osmometer which assists in the determination of the osmolarity (saltiness) of very small volumes of aqueous solutions.

For many years, until his death in September 2000, Marjorie and Bernard enjoyed summering at her family's home on the French Rivera.

She was an amazing lady who accomplished many things in her time. Marjorie (the little old lady with the little red car) will be sadly missed by the Town of Hartford. She was also loved deeply by her family in France and will be missed greatly by her friends Helene Georgi and Barb and Ken Cutler.

Besides her parents and husband, Marjorie was predeceased by her sister, Jaqueline (Larou) San-Van Lander.

Marjorie is survived by her brother, Pierre Larou of Paris, France; and her niece, Marjorie "Minou" Casy-Mazerand of Cannes, France. She is also survived by her close friends Barbara and Ken Cutler of Hartford, NY, and Helene Georgi of Fort Ann,NY.
