Obituary for Mercedes Eckman

Mercedes  Eckman
Mercedes Eckman, 88, passed away on Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at The Pines at Glens Falls.

Born in Middletown on October 1, 1920 she was the daughter of Robert and Kathryn (Barry) Cranston.

Mercedes was brought up in Middletown and graduated from Middletown High School and went on to receive her teaching degree from the State Teacher’s College in Oswego in 1947.

She married John Eckman on March 31st 1944 in Shreveport, LA and after college they settled in So. Glens Falls to raise their family. She taught Kindergarten for 25 years in the So. Glens Falls School System.

Mercedes was a member of the Church of the Messiah in Glens Falls. Her dear friends Marge Hull and Ruth Sunberg, from the church, always brought a smile to her face. She loved receiving the pictures and cards sent to her by the children of the church and spoke of them often. She and John spent most of their summers boating with friends on Lake George on their boat “Teacher’s Pet”. ‘Merc’ was also a member of the Glens Falls Hospital Guild for several years.

Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband John after 54 years of marriage and their only son Robert.

Survivors include her two cousins: Edwin Parliman and his wife Betty of Garnerville, NY and his brother Roger Parliman and his wife Kay of Graham, Washington and her long time friend, Tracy Suttle, who ‘Merc’ considered her daughter.

Friends and family may call from 1-3pm at the M. B. Kilmer funeral Home, 136 Main Street, So. Glens Falls, NY.

A funeral service will follow at 3pm with Rev. Scott Harding Rector of the Church of the Messiah, Glens Falls, officiating.

Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family at Wallkill Cemetery in Middletown, NY.
