Obituary for Paul Kenneth McGeoch

Paul Kenneth McGeoch
ARGYLE -Paul Kenneth McGeoch, 77, passed away at Fort Hudson Nursing Center in Fort Edward, NY, on September 20, 2013, surrounded by family.

A resident of Fort Hudson since 2012, Paul was born in Argyle on February 16, 1936, to Rollin J. and Grace E. (Todd) McGeoch. He graduated from Argyle Central School in 1953 and went to work with his father on the family farm. Paul married Barbara J. Lundy of Hartford on October 6, 1956, and together they raised three children.

Paul ran Maple Band Farm in Argyle from 1962 to 1995, when he turned over the business to his son Raymond. He was active in many agricultural organizations in the Northeast, including Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS), Washington County Extension Service, Dairyman’s League (DairyLea), the Holstein-Friesian Association of America, Regional Cooperative Marketing Agency (RCMA), and the Argyle Grange. He earned several herd production awards from Eastern A.I. and served as committeeman and director at Agway.

Paul was active in the community, serving as an elder and deacon at the North Argyle Presbyterian Church, a founder and leader at the North Argyle Community Church, and a member of the Argyle Presbyterian Church. He served on the Argyle Central School Board of Education for ten years and the Washington County Board of Education. He also earned his EMT certification and volunteered with the Argyle Emergency Squad for several years.

Paul was an avid bowler, participating in several area bowling leagues until his health made it too difficult. His main avocation was flying. Earning his private pilot’s license in 1974, he was a member of the Argyle Flying Club, Glens Falls Pilots Association, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), and the Vermont Chapter of the International Flying Farmers. Paul and Barbara’s involvement with the Flying Farmers introduced them to many new friends all over the United States and Canada and allowed them to travel from coast to coast for associated activities. He enjoyed giving rides to friends and family from his airstrip on the farm.

Paul is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara, sons Russell (Cyndi Thompson) of Powell, Wyoming; and Raymond (Mary) of Clifton Park, New York; daughter Patricia (Kenneth) Burton of Stamford, Vermont, sister Ruth Churchill, four grandchildren (Ryan McGeoch, Jonathan (Sarah) McGeoch, Gregory Burton, and Sarah Burton), and two great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

At Paul’s request there will be no calling hours.

Memorial Services will be conducted 11 am Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at the Argyle Presbyterian Church, Main St. Argyle. Following the services there will be a reception in Fellowship Hall.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

The family suggests that memorial donations be directed to the Argyle Presbyterian Church or the Argyle EMS, 15 Sheridan Street, Argyle, NY 12809.
