Obituary for Richard William 'Geezer' Gordon Jr.

Richard William 'Geezer' Gordon Jr.
WHITEHALL — Richard William “Geezer” Gordon Jr., 73, of Carlton Road, passed away peacefully Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012, at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, after a long courageous battle with his health.

Born July 15, 1939, he was the son of the late Richard William Sr. and Margaret (Wood) Gordon.

He was a graduate of Whitehall High School, Class of 1956.

He served his country proudly in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1961. He was part of the Albany C.E.R.T from 1986 to 1987. He retired from the New York state Department of Corrections in Albany as a lieutenant in 1987.

On April 21, 1959, Geezer married the love of his life, Nan Leddick, and they raised their three handsome sons together on Carlton Road.

Geezer served as the Whitehall town judge for 23 years. He was the town supervisor for a two-year term. He was a member of the BPOE Lodge No. 1491 of Whitehall, and a member of the American Legion Post No. 83, Whitehall, N.Y. He was also a member of the Whitehall Volunteer Fire Company.

Besides his parents, Geezer was predeceased by his mother- and father-in-law, Katherine and Raymond Leddick; his brother-in-law, Bernard “Porky” Wheeler; brother and sister-in-law, Wesley Ashline Sr. and his wife, Edith; a nephew, Wesley “Brother” Ashline Jr.; and uncles, Lester Gordon, Raymond LaGoy and Francis “Gibby” Gordon.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 53 years, Nan (Leddick) Gordon; sister-in-law, Eloise Wheeler; three sons, Bruce Gordon Sr. and his wife, Allison, of Long Island, Mark Gordon and his wife, Peggy, and Scott Gordon, all of Whitehall; two brothers, the Rev. Harlow Gordon and his wife, Jacqueline, of Amsterdam, as well as their children and grandchildren and Robert Gordon and his wife, Barbara, of Whitehall; special friends, Bobby and Mary Hopkins of Fort Ann, Nick New of Whitehall, and Francis and Laurie Wilbur of Whitehall, and their children Brandon, Caitlin (Yum-Yum) and Colin (Bo); grandchildren, Danielle of New York City, who helped Geezer tremendously in his last couple of weeks, Bruce Gordon Jr., Bryant Tota of California, Hope Gordon, Hannah Gordon, Shannon Wilbur and her husband, Eric, Derek Gordon, Joshua Rubrecht and his son, Elijah, and Megan Cook and her husband, Brian, and their daughter, Aubrey; two aunts, Patricia Gordon of Whitehall and Vera Gordon of Woodbourne; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and friends.

Nothing made Geezer happier than going shopping and finding a good bargain, especially at Price Chopper. He enjoyed doing adult swim with his friends. He loved his children, but he had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren. He was always singing or humming his favorite tune. Every Friday, he would play cards with “The Hopkins.” He loved to make people laugh at all times. He will always be remembered for his witty humor and “colorful” jokes. He truly cared about others and his legacy will live on within his family and friends.

At Geezer’s request, there will be no calling hours.

Family and friends are invited to a time of fellowship and refreshments for a celebration of Geezer’s life from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012, at Big G’s Pub, 68 Main St., Whitehall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Town of Whitehall, 58 Skenesborough Drive, Whitehall, NY 12887.

The family would like to thank all of those who prayed for Geezer during his last couple of days. The prayers helped Geezer pass peacefully.

“For all the ladies I’ve left behind (I’ve loved you all), we will meet again some day — Love Geezer.”
