Richard Melvin "Dick"  Madden
SOUTH GLENS FALLS
Richard M. Madden, 90, died peacefully at his home on October 18, 2008.

Born on October 20th, 1917 in Rangeley, Maine.

Predeceased by his parents, John and Lola Madden, his wife Dorothy and sister Ruth Woodman. Survived by his sister, Teresa Davis; sons, David (Theresa) Madden and Dennis (Lynne) Madden; seven grandchildren, Carrie (Matthew) Raponi, Christopher (Virginia) Madden, Abbey, Zachary and Katherine Madden, Emily and Claire Madden; four great grandsons, Tristan, Lucian and Bennett Raponi and William Madden; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Dick graduated with honors from Northeastern University in 1941 and immediately went to work for the General Electric Company in Pittsfield, Mass., where he met his future wife Dorothy Craik.

A resident of South Glens Falls for 57 years, he retired from GE after more than 40 years of service as an electrical engineer and electrical equipment salesman, traveling to nearly every state in the US.

Dick was a Rotarian with over 30 years of perfect attendance, serving as President, Secretary and receiving Rotary’s highest honor as a Paul Harris Fellow.

He served as a member of the South Glens Falls Board of Education and Zoning Board. He and Dorothy were active in Boy Scouts, Little League, and the American Red Cross, organizing blood drives. They also enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels.

His hobbies included golf and gardening. He was a charter member and past club champion of the T-Bird Country Club. He loved working in his garden, growing and sharing produce with his family and friends.

In his eighties he became a “paperboy”, delivering for the Post Star. He enjoyed meeting and talking with his customers and was the New York State East Adult winner, Carrier of the Year for 2001.

He found a second family at the South Glens Falls United Methodist Church, helping to schedule ushers for services, delivering communion to shut-ins and working with the Young Life Program and the Church’s Hannaford Food Ministry.

Friends are invited to attend a celebration of his life at a memorial service on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at 1:00 p.m., at the South Glens Falls United Methodist Church, 15 Maplewood Parkway, South Glens Falls, with the Rev. Kelly Warner, Pastor, officiating.

Burial will be at the convienince of the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Captial Campaign Fund c/o the South Glens Falls United Methodist Church, 15 Maplewood Parkway, South Glens Falls, NY 12803.
