Obituary for Richard Norton

SCHUYLERVILLE

With sadness in our eyes and love in our hearts- we the caretakers and friends of Richard Norton announce his passing on 11/12/23. Richard passed away peacefully at his community residence with staff by his side. Richard was born in Rome, NY on 6/11/47. He is predeceased by his mother Gladys Norton.

Richie Baby, as he was affectionately known and preferred to be called, was one of a kind and one in a million. To some he appeared to be cantankerous, but once you got to know him, it became apparent that this was a playful act. Everyone who knew Richie Baby loved him for who he was.
Richard spent many years living in Cambridge, NY, and was well known around town. He enjoyed walking from his home to the Stewart’s Shop where all the staff there knew him. He loved to get his coffee, visit with the locals, and buy a few scratch-off tickets, always looking for that big win. He loved monster movies like Godzilla, King Kong, and enjoyed dressing up for Halloween. He liked to go fishing in his younger years, and he mowed lawns in the Cambridge area on his trusted lawn tractor. He loved animals, especially cats, and had a cat named Star for many years. More recently he had a little cutie named Lucy.

Richard loved getting mail and had a few words for the mailman if he didn’t receive any. He always liked to go to McDonald’s, Five Guys, and the Burger Den for his favorite nosh- a hamburger. He really liked Five Guys because they played rock and roll. He went to breakfast with friends every month at Denny’s, enjoying mashed potatoes with his eggs and bacon.

His favorite sports teams were the NY Yankees and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He attended a baseball game at the old Yankee Stadium with a friend and could talk stats and averages with the best of them.
For over twenty years, Richard worked at The Workshop at CWI, and when he retired, he was satisfied that he had contributed to a workforce and had been a valued member of a community.

Richard is survived by his longtime friends and advocates: Joan Mercier, Jan Black, and Laura Neadle. He is also survived by his loving cat Lucy.

Arrangements are in the care of the M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 82 Broadway, Fort Edward, NY 12828. A graveside service will be conducted in the spring at a date to be determined.
