Obituary for Richard E. Smith

Argyle

Richard E. Smith, 78, of Argyle, passed away on Saturday, January, 19, 2019 at Fort Hudson Nursing Home, Fort Edward after a long illness.

Born on Dec. 2, 1940 in Canajoharie, he was the son of the late Peter E. and Eleanor (Olmsted) Smith.

Rich was a US Navy veteran serving from 1961 to 1964. On Nov. 14, 1964, Rich married Betsy McDougall at St. Joseph Church, Fort Edward. Rich worked for Service Master, working at Glens Falls Hospital for 17 years as a Laundry Manager retiring in 1996. He was a 40 plus year member and past Fire Chief for the J.A. Barkley Hose Co. in Argyle. He was a handy man who enjoyed creating & building just about anything from cabinets to doll beds. He loved helping others, spending time with his family especially his children and grandchildren. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed golf vacations with Betsy and his friends.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Neale Smith, his niece, Kathleen Carrie Smith Congdon, his brothers-in-law, Douglas Montanye and Robert McDougall.

Left to cherish his memory besides his wife of 54 years include their children, Daryl W. Smith (Aimee) of Cambridge and R. Dean Smith of Cossayuna; their grandchildren, Delaney, Zoe, Trey Smith and Avery, Evan, and Kelsy Smith; his sister, Judy Montanye of Canajoharie, his brother, David Smith (Cathy) of Canajoharie, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Memorial Service will be conducted at 11:00am on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019 at the Argyle Presbyterian Church, Main St. Argyle. Following the services there will be a reception in the Fellowship Hall.

Interment with military honors will be conducted at 11:30am on Friday, April 5, 2019 at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.
