Obituary for Robert E. Lockwood

South Glens Falls
Robert E. (Bob) Lockwood went into the arms of the Lord, on Sunday, 12 May 2013, surrounded by his family at his home on Main Street.

He was born on July 25, 1921 to the late Allen B. and Anna E. Lockwood in Wilton, New York. Bob attended Saratoga High School and graduated in 1941.

After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Bob joined the US Marine Corps in 1942 and as a member of the 2nd Marine Division as a Field Telephone Man and Radio Telephone Operator. Bob saw action in the campaigns at Tarawa, Gilbert Is., Saipan-Tinian, Marianas Islands, Okinawa, Ryukyu Retto, and other small islands in the Pacific Theater of Operations during WWII. He received the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal and a Letter of Commendation for bravery under enemy fire before being honorably discharged in December 1945.

Upon returning home he married the love of his life, June H. Ordway, of South Glens Falls. Together they built their lives and homes with love and raised their family of three girls who cherished and adored their soft spoken father.

Bob worked as a linesman, installer and eventually central office repairman, at the New York Bell Telephone Company until he retired in 1982 after 34 years of dedicated service. Bob enjoyed building things, tinkering and repairing just about anything. If you needed to find him he would be in his shop making or fixing something that one of his girls had broken. He and June also enjoyed square dancing with a group called the Merry Mohicans, as well as their trips to Florida in their later years to enjoy the sun in Zephyrhills.

Besides his parents, Bob was predeceased by his brother Alvin Lockwood; sister-in-law Madelyn (Pepper) Lockwood; nephew Charles (Chuckie) Lockwood; his father-in-law & mother-in-law, Earl W. and Lola M. Ordway; sister-in-law Gladys Joy Geyh; and brother-in-law Donald E. Ordway.

Bob leaves behind his beautiful bride of 67 wonderful years June H. (Ordway) Lockwood; three daughters, Elaine L. Bryan (Roy) of Florence, AL, Roberta A. Lockwood (Ara) of Hopkins, South Carolina, and Donna M. Fisher (Dave) of Queensbury; four grandchildren, Moira Bruce (Chancey) of Florence, AL, Colleen M. Kirby (Shannon) of Florence, AL, Robert P. Fisher, and Phyllis J. Fisher of Queensbury; two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth I. Bruce and Alan W. Bruce of Florence, AL. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews and a very special and loyal friend of the family, Thelma M. Dennis, of South Glens Falls.

The family wishes to give special thanks and gratitude to Dr. Glen Anderson, Lillian, Mike and Linda, the dedicated care givers that provided comfort to both Bob and June during the last few challenging years of his life.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 from 1:00 until 5:00 p.m. at the family home located at 184 Main Street, South Glens Falls, New York 12803.

At the family’s request the funeral service will be private and scheduled at a later date.
