Obituary for Robert Muckenhoupt

Robert Gerald Muckenhoupt, 87, passed away at his home in Owings Mills, MD, on Saturday, August 26, 2023. Robert, known as “Bob” to family and friends, was a loving husband, father and grandfather with a big heart and smile.

Born July 18, 1936, he spent his early childhood in Poughkeepsie, NY, before moving to Latham, NY, as a teenager with his parents, Robert and Beatrice, and brothers, James and Neil. After high school, a strong connection to his Catholic faith led him to enroll at Holy Apostles College and Seminary in Connecticut, where he graduated in 1964.

Bob briefly considered the priesthood but instead chose a secular path, moving to Boston to start a family and career. Drawing upon his proficiency with computers, he co-founded Beacon Associates, a consulting firm specializing in information technology planning and project management for the financial services industry. His expertise brought him around the world for Beacon and later CitiFinancial, particularly to Mexico, Venezuela and Brazil, where his fluency in Spanish and Portuguese helped him thrive, along with his kindness and warm personality.

More than anything, Bob was devoted to this family. A caring and attentive dad and stepdad, he took great joy in being with his kids, and his grandchildren. He was a proud champion of their accomplishments and a source of comfort and support during their moments of need. He loved a family dinner with a good bottle of wine. He embraced the opportunity to share stories, laugh, and contemplate the meaning of life, often aided by wisdom from the latest spiritual philosopher he was reading. He was the best company.

Bob was always curious and questioning. He was at home in a bookstore. As he aged, he explored his ever-deepening spirituality through meditation and the practice of mindfulness.

Bob is survived by his wife, Sonia; sons, Phelipe and Matheus, daughters, Christina and Mary Lou; and grandchildren, Bailey and Miles Roy, Nayla Portela Garcia, and Helena Miranda Duarte.

A memorial service for family will be held at M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home 136 Main St. South Glens Falls, NY 12803 followed by the burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Glens Falls, where Bob will be laid to rest beside his parents.
