Obituary for Sterling J. "Porky " Sumner

Fort Edward

Sterling J. “Porky” Sumner, 82, passed away on Saturday, January 9, 2021, at Glens Falls Hospital from complications of the coronavirus.

Born on January 30, 1938, in Fort Edward, he was the son of the late Roland and Eva (Barker) Sumner.

Pork was a member of the Village Baptist Church in Fort Edward. On September 27, 1975, Sterling married Jean Flewelling.

He retired from the Argyle Central School after 32 years as a custodian. No day was ever quiet when he was working. From flying tin foil balls to stealing cookies and hanging tin cans in doorways, no student or coworker was safe from the daily pranks him and Mac were stirring up. Pork also worked for Hudson Falls United Methodist Church and Village Baptist Church in Fort Edward.

After his retirement, Pork enjoyed going to breakfast, going to garage sales, wheeling, and dealing with vehicles, antiques and whatever caught his eye. He made several stops a week at local businesses to bring the staff goodies.

In addition to his parents, Pork was predeceased by his siblings, Roland Sumner Jr. (Peg), Frances Wright (Bradley), Douglas Sumner (Mary) and Elwyn Sumner (Carole).

Left to cherish his memory include his wife of 45 years, Jean; his daughters, Kelly Strainer (Stan), Doreen Sumner (Jeff Constantineau), Peggy Norton (David); his grandchildren, Adam Wells, Sam and Carson Strainer, Shawn Norton, David Helffrich and Burgandy Smith; his great-grandchildren, Ava and Scarlett Wells; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Fran and Guy Harrington, Norma Monroe, Belva Langworthy, Barbara Jenkins, Gail Flewelling, Linda Flewelling, Don Crosse; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Many thanks to his friend Jim Kennedy for the coffee runs to Stewarts, hanging out in the garage and keeping him company during the day. His family can not find the words to express how grateful they are for the care that he received at the Glens Falls Hospital. Special thank you to nurses David and Rico on the Covid Wing. In ICU, nurses Nicole, Karla and supervisor Allison, Doctors Serfarelli and Neu and most importantly nurses Allison from ICU and Nicole from respiratory for being by his side making his journey to his heavenly home, a peaceful one.
