Obituary for Sven Holmquist

Glens Falls

Sven Holmquist, 99, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home on Davis Street on September 2, 2013.

Born on December 12, 1913, in Gansevoort, NY, he was the son of Gustave and Karolina (Frick) Holmquist, both immigrants from Sweden.

Sven attended early grades at the one-room schoolhouse at Clark’s Corner, and South Glens Falls schools, until he moved to Monument Avenue in Glens Falls. He then attended Glens Falls Schools and graduated from high school in 1930. During high school Sven was a tennis player and won the junior division cup in the city tournament in 1930. His work in the construction industry took him to many parts of the Northeast. During WWII, Sven worked at GE in Schenectady. When he returned to Glens Falls to raise his family, he continued to play in tennis tournaments. Having been raised on a farm, he continued his love for gardening into his 80’s. Sven was a member of the South Glens Falls Baptist Church.

Besides his parents, Sven is predeceased by his sisters, Anna Sundberg (Franz) and Emma Abare (Lloyd), his brothers, Eric (Beatrice) and William (Gerry), and his son, Hans.

Sven is survived by his three children, Linda Smith (Glenn) of Atlanta, GA., Andrea Gallant of Latham, Jon Holmquist of Atlanta, GA, a granddaughter, Eleanor Smith of Boston, grandsons, Geoffrey Smith of Athens, GA, Christopher Gallant of West Sand Lake, Ryan Gallant and Stephen Gallant of Latham, and great-grandchildren, Ingrid and Clara Smith and Christopher and Jacob Gallant. He also leaves behind his nephews Richard MacDonald and Oscar Sundberg, both of Glens Falls, and several other nieces and a nephew.

A funeral service will follow calling hours at 3pm at the funeral home with Rev. David McCane, pastor of the Oneida Community Church, officiating.

Interment will follow at Southside Cemetery, South Glens Falls.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Sven’s memory may be made to High Peaks Hospice Inc. Warren Co., 79 Glenwood Ave, Queensbury, NY 12804 or to the First Baptist Church of South Glens Falls, 1721 Route 9, South Glens Falls, NY 12803.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the wonderful care given to their father over the last several years that allowed him to remain at home. In particular, they would like to thank Diana Paradis, Peggy McArthur, Rose Caley and Daisy Duell, and all the assistants from Interim Healthcare and High Peaks Hospice.
