Obituary for Terry Craig Archard

Terry Craig Archard of Middle Granville died on July 8. He was born in Glens Falls, the 6th of 8 children. He grew up in then rural Queensbury among an extensive family, on land cleared by his Harris ancestors before the Revolutionary War.

As a youngster, he loved to be outside, roaming the woods and fields with his two younger siblings and three cousins [“us six kids”], making up games, playing softball and being a little wild and free. He grew up with a belief in hard work and from a young age found ways to earn his own money. A good way was to sell the Grit weekly. A poor way was to pick strawberries for Art on the promise of later payment. A little older, he worked at the airport where he learned to fly, something he loved.

Terry graduated from Lake George Central School in 1960. He served a hitch in the US Army as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division. There, he made nearly a hundred jumps and earned his wings. His unit was "locked and loaded" and circling over Florida during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Terry was among the 1970s ``back to the Landers" and settled in a small village in Quebec's Eastern Townships, beginning a long association with Canada. He worked as a carpenter and building contractor in Quebec and Ontario and after taking a degree from George Brown College was a social worker in Toronto. With a passion for fairness for the working class, he worked tirelessly with others to unionize his agency.

He moved to Inlet in the Adirondacks in the 2000s, furthering a longstanding personal and family interest in camping, hunting and fishing there. Near death experiences followed Terry, including an Army hand grenade incident, a Toronto auto accident, substance abuse related hospitalizations in Canada and New York State, and a cardiac arrest in a Granville supermarket, where prompt action by others saved his life.

Terry was divorced from Christine Vogel of Madison, Wisconsin, whom he married in the 1960s. Christine and their daughter, Heather, are among his survivors. These also include his brother Douglas (Jean Kennedy) of Burlington, Vermont, sister Sandra Smith (Robin Lyle) of Argyle, and brother Gavin (Karen) of Ontario. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as his beloved Yorkie, Oliver. Terry was predeceased by his parents Wallace and Pearl Harris Archard, sisters Patricia (Sidney Payne), Jean and Mary, and brother Malcolm, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Three other very important people who have also predeceased him were his stepfather Louis Payne, his brother-in-law Sid Payne, and his Uncle Rowland, hunting buddies all.

Funeral services will be at the Saratoga National Cemetery on Monday, July 18, at 11 A.M. If attending, please arrive at 10:45 A.M.
