Obituary for Thomas Scott Gleason

Thomas Scott Gleason
SOUTH GLENS FALLS -
Thomas Scott “Poppy” Gleason peacefully passed away at his home on Saturday, July 3, 2010 with his wife and daughters at his side.

Born on April 17, 1934, Scott was the son of the late Clifford R. and Helen I, (LaPoint) Gleason.

On January 16, 1954, Scott married the love of his life, Sally Dickinson, in the Hudson Falls United Methodist Church. At the time of his passing they had celebrated over 56 of marriage together, raising “the girls”, spending time with each other, and being each other’s best friend.

His family was the center of his life, and he treasured every moment he could spend with them. He didn’t have son-in-laws, he had sons. Anyone that met Scott seemed to immediately like him and become a friend, with many of them becoming lifetime friends.

Scott was employed at Nibco of New York in South Glens Falls for 43 years. He also served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1957.

From 1994 to 2006, he and his wife spent their winters in Bonita Springs, Florida. During their times spent on Cabaret Drive they made many new friends with people from all over, including Canada, Missouri, Maryland, Connecticut, New York and North Carolina. One of Scott’s fondest friends in Florida was Justin Fitzpatrick.

Scott was a member of the South Glens Falls United Methodist Church for 55 years and most recently a member of the Hudson Falls United Methodist Church. He was also a long time volunteer with the Meals on Wheels Program.

He was an avid NASCAR and long time Dale Earnhardt Sr. fan, loved motorcycles, enjoyed racing and played golf, but family was always hobby number one. He simply adored his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. One of the many family activities Poppy enjoyed was camping with his brother Fred, his nephews and his “boys”.

At the tender young age of 12, Scott engaged his love for motorcycles. He swept out Carl Crandall’s motorcycle shop and received his first motorcycle for his hard work. Carl became a mentor to Scott and his brother Fred, and they shared many fond memories and times together.

In addition to his parents, Scott was predeceased by an infant son, Thomas S. Gleason II; four brothers, Clifford, Raymond, Robert and Richard Gleason; a sister, Marn Langdon; and a special nephew, Richard Gleason.

Scott is survived by his wife, Sarah “Vera” Gleason; his daughters, Kay Lynda Lopez and her husband, Michael, of Queensbury, Merrie Jo Dwyer and her husband, Kevin, of South Glens Falls, and Kelli Ann McGowan, and her husband, Kim, of Glens Falls; his grandchildren, , Kathy VanHees and her husband Kris, Joshua Lopez and his girlfriend Casey Allen, Daniel Dwyer and his girlfriend Jess LaRose, Patrick Dwyer and his partner Robin, Hunter Scott Anderson, and Mariah McGowan (just one more); his great grandchildren, Daniel, Alyanna and Nikolas; his brothers, Floyd Gleason, and Fred Gleason and his wife Jean; a sister, Barbara DeGroff and husband, Bruce; a special niece, Linda Hammond; several nieces, nephews and cousins, and of course his beloved dog, Digger Pee Willie Nelson.

At Scott’s request there are no public calling hours, and graveside services will be private at the convenience of the family. Online condolences may be posted at kilmerfuneralhome.com.

A memorial service and celebration of Scott’s life will be held at 11 a.m.on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at the Hudson Falls United Methodist Church, with Reverend Dawn Robbins officiating.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Peter Gray, Dr. Christopher Hoy and Amy, Dr. Charles Lowe, and Dr. John Wienhold as well as all of their associated staff for the kindness and care shown to Scott during his illness. Special thanks also go to the nurses and staff of the Glens Falls Hospital; JoAnn Killian for her wonderful care and help these past few weeks; and Community Hospice of Saratoga for their guidance and support these last few days.

The family suggests donations in Scott’s name be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.

Arrangements are under the care of the M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 136 Main Street, South Glens Falls, NY 12803.
