Obituary for William A. Sherman

William A. Sherman
Gansevoort
William Abram Sherman of West River Road, Gansevoort died on June 29, 2010, at the age of 90, at VA Medical Center in Albany. As he guarded and protected his country while in the Navy, he will now guard and protect his family while in Heaven.

Born at the Sherman family farm in Bacon Hill on March 22, 1920, he was the son of the late William Abram and Alice (Hagadorn) Sherman. He graduated from South Glens Falls High School in 1938 and from Green Mountain College in Poultney, VT in 1940. During his senior years he attended Siena College in Latham.

On October 22, 1942, he married Eilleen C. Bain in Argyle. On their last anniversary together, they celebrated 67 years of marriage.

On November 3, 1942, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He bravely and proudly served his country with the Sea Bees during World War II. Aboard the US LST-333 in the Mediterranean going into the invasion of Sicily, he was severely injured in action on June 22, 1943. He was honorably discharged with a Purple Heart on November 3, 1943.

Throughout his lifetime, he had been employed by Fowlers in Glens Falls, Sandy Hill Co-Operative in Hudson Falls, Washington County Co-Operative Insurance Company in Greenwich and the Town of Northumberland in Saratoga County as Supervisor. He always took great pride in maintaining the Sherman family farm and looked forward to the spring and summer months when he could tend to his riverside garden.

He was a former member of the United Methodist Church in Gansevoort, and a charter member of the Gansevoort Volunteer Fire Department where he was past president and also served on the board of directors.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his infant son, Donald William Sherman; his baby granddaughter, Kristy Jean Sherman; his brothers-in-law, Jared F. Thomas, Stanley Rogers, Clifford (Chip) McKernon and Addison Gillis; and, his sisters-in-law, Helen Walsh Bain and Doris Bain Rogers.

William is survived by his wife Eilleen C. Bain, and their two sons, Merrill A. Sherman and his wife, Carile (Pearsall), of Gansevoort and Gary L. Sherman and his wife, Dorothy (McWhorter), of Schuylerville. He will be sadly missed by his five beloved grandchildren: Robert Sherman of Wallingford, CT, Rachel Sherman Barnes and her husband, Matthew, of West Chatham, MA, Audra Sherman Cook and her husband, Edson, of Gansevoort, Jason Sherman of Sunderland, MA and Laura Sherman Miller of Gansevoort, as well as his grandson-in-law Courtland Miller. Survivors also include his sister, Eleanor Thomas, of Schuylerville; his sisters-in-law, Pauline Shaw of Saratoga Springs, Marion Gillis of Hudson Falls, and Anna McKernon of Argyle; his brother-in-law, Roscoe James (Rock) Bain, and his wife, Mary Elizabeth (Bette), of Argyle. William is also survived by several cousins and many nieces, nephews, and friends. The family dogs, Trinket and Greta, will miss him dearly as well.
