The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Joseph Prefontaine can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Protective hen, mentor

I met Joe in 1981 when I joined the ambulance corps.(OVAC) I came under Joe's watchful eye when I started dating my future wife Sheri. Sheri was a former Explorer Post member who just finished graduate school, and had re joined OVAC. Little did I know that Joe, and the late Bob Kramer were very suspicious of anyone dating Sheri. Joe and Bob were Sheri's Post advisors and I guess they did not realize that Sheri was no longer a post member. I am happy to report that Sheri, and I are going on 31 years of wedded bliss. Joe and Sheri got me to become an Assistant Post Advisor. A big part , of the Post was going on camp outs with teenage boys and girls. The Post provided first aid for Boy Scout outings. An advisors job was to keep the girls separate from the boys. It was a lot of fun and I believe that Joe enjoyed it the most . In the summer of 1982 I was one of Joe's students in his EMT class. Joe not only coordinated the course but he was a fantastic instructor. Joe's courses were open to the greater EMS community. Many of the EMT s that were members of neighboring CORPS were trained by Joe. It was Joe who encouraged me to become a Medic. I became a Medic in 1985. Joe was always someone you could go to discuss a difficult call. I had the opportunity to ride with Joe on many calls. He was an excellent Medic. In 1989 I became the Captain of OVAC. I sought out Joe's advice on leadership, I tapped into Joe's experience as a past Captain. Joe will be missed ,not only by the EMS community , but will be sorely missed by Sheri and I. I guess we have come full circle Joe started as Sheri's mentor and he became mine as well. God blessed us with Joe. John Muth Ex student
