The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Joseph Prefontaine can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Thank you.

Joe was Medic One

Joe was Ground Zero for OVAC going Advanced Life Support (ALS). In the late '70's OVAC considered undertaking the huge step of going ALS. Many internal meetings and studies were conducted to consider making this happen. Joe's response was simple...we have to go back to basics. Every member has to master basic Emergency Medical Technician skills before we jump to ALS. That's exactly what we did. Joe whipped us literally and collectively into shape. We trained, drilled and mastered basic EMT skills and then moved on to ALS. Joe's training sessions were far more stressful than any ambulance call that I was ever on. Anybody who studied under Joe knows the answer to the following...Can you spell Albany? The answer is not ALBANY. The answer is YES. Thanks to Joe there are many hundreds of well trained EMT's and Medics walking around today. Thanks to Joe there are hundreds if not thousands of patients walking around today. Joe was quite, unassuming and patient. I had the privilege to be his First Lieutenant and learned from his unique leadership skills. I remember collectively singing at an annual dinner dance "We did it Joe's Way". Thanks Joe! You were the best!
